Year 8 Girls Cricket Division Premiers 2026

After a combination of lunchtime quick trainings and more valuable after school sessions, our squad of 13 Year 8 girls was prepared to host Ringwood on our well-prepared oval for the first interschool cricket match at the College in many years.

Team leaders, Isla H and Violet S, having won the toss and inviting Ringwood to have a bat, prepared themselves to bowl the first 4 overs. With only 12 off the bat, our first bowling pair had provided a steady start. Our other 5 girls who elected to follow our openers also restricted their batters. Deserved praise, of course, was bestowed upon Ringwood’s Isla, after she lost her wicket for 47, following a skilful and exciting, diving catch to Holly Y in the gully.

Interestingly, the mode of dismissals was quite varied in this match. Of the 7 who were judged out, 2 were caught (Liv H and Holly); 2 were run out (Isla to Koa C being one); one bowled (Taya A); one stumped (Koa) and one hit wicket (Summer S).

The figures were: Summer 2/7 off 4; Isla 1/5 off 4; Holly 1/1 off 1; Taya 1/14 off 2; Violet 0/18 off 4; Liv 0/20 off 4 and Koa 0/12 off 1.

With our opposition on 7/85 off 20, we realised that an average of 4.4 runs per over would be sufficient to fly the flag at Norwood.

We began our run chase most attackingly, with Violet hitting a cracking 4 to mid-wicket with the first ball that she faced. At the conclusion of the 5th over, we were already on 57 with Liv and Violet in control. Both continued to score freely which facilitated their retirement with still 12 overs to spare. Liv 31*(3 fours) and Violet 36* (5 fours) had steered the team to victory and on the road to Eastern Region. Our 7 batters who followed collectively made a positive contribution: Summer, Isla, Taya (3 fours- one straight drive through the goals and another through the points!), Holly (2 fours), Koa, Issy and Ella (one four and one five!). Sophie M, Scarlett F, Indie S and Caitlyn C were waiting in the wings when the final over had been bowled.

A big thank you goes to Year 9 assistants, Dana S, Bonnie P and Tara S and to Tom, our groundsman, for his continued dedicated work on the oval.

Twenty 20 cricket resumes in Term 4. As runners up at Region last year, we are aspiring to go one better. We will brush off the cobwebs towards the end of Term 3, ready for the challenge.
