Foundation

Welcome to Foundation!
Over the first few weeks of school, we have focused on ensuring that everyone feels welcome and safe. We’ve spent time building connections and it has been great to see new friendships form. Together, we’ve been establishing our "Ways of Working." Some of the values students have identified include:
- We all look out for one another.
- One speaker at a time.
We all help out.
Students have embraced these values, caring for one another, helping each other and showing a willingness to listen to their peers.
We have quickly established classroom routines. Students are doing a great job unpacking their bags each morning and bringing in their lunchboxes and drink bottles. Seating spots change every two weeks to encourage students to build connections with different peers.
This fortnight, students have learnt the sounds m and s (Maggie Mouse and Sammy Seal). We are discussing words that contain these sounds at the beginning and end of words. Students have also been practising forming these letters correctly, ensuring the correct starting points, first on whiteboards and then on paper. In preparation for phonics, we’ve been talking about the concepts of words and sentences. Students are practising writing their names with correct capitalisation and participating in rotation activities where they work independently in small groups, completing a task before moving to the next. Some of the activities have focused on working memory and fine motor.
Students have received their reading bag and diary, which they are excited about. The home reading routine is in place, where you can read with your child through the picture books they bring home. More information will be shared about the reading process once students begin bringing home their readers. You may also notice handwriting activities for your child to complete when the box has been ticked.
In Mathematics, students have been learning about patterns, searching for and creating their own using objects and even each other. They have drawn patterns consisting of up to three repeating parts. We have also been practising counting and understanding numbers 1-9. Students are exploring numbers as collections, through ten frames, numerals and number lines. They are also practising correctly forming numeral representations of numbers.
Students also created a collaborative prayer cloth, which will be used throughout the year during our meditation and prayer sessions.
A reminder that from Monday the 16th, students will attend school five days a week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to pop in before or after school, or send a message on Dojo.
Have a safe weekend!
