Religious Education News

Mr Andrew May

This term our Year 10 students have been learning about the many challenges that face the Catholic Church. The purpose of this unit, as with all of the work addressed in our Religious Education program, is to provide our students with knowledge, skills and abilities that they are able to take with them into their lives outside of school.

During the Wednesday morning Mass this week, Fr Paul spoke to students about the challenge of being shy. The first reading was part of Saint Paul’s letter to a young Christian by the name of Timothy. This young man had been appointed the leader of the Church in his part of Greece by Paul, and was being challenged by the older Christians, many of whom felt that a person as young as Timothy had no right to be placed in authority over them. Fr Paul used the example of Timothy to show that we are often challenged in our lives by those around us or by events out of our control. It is with God’s help that we are able to confront and overcome these challenges.

This week we have welcomed back young Lasallians from the Lasallian Mission Council, helping to lead our Year 10 and staff retreats at St Albert’s College, UNE. Our Year 11 Lasallian Youth Leaders also provided assistance as small group facilitators. This can be very challenging for these students and is an important stage on their journey towards school student leadership.

As we draw close to the end of the term, we continue to focus on our support for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Students and staff have supported this appeal for many, many years, donating thousands of items of clothing to help the needy in our community. This appeal will culminate in the last week of term when the baskets are donated to our local Vinnies chapter. Thank you to everyone who has supported the appeal so far!

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
