Primary School Update

As we step into Term 3, we embrace a period rich with growth and consolidation. This term is not only a time for advancing educational and personal development but also a chance to solidify the learning and relationships established throughout the year. As seasons change, so do our classroom dynamics, community interactions and educational experiences. Term 3 offers a unique opportunity for students to deepen their understanding and connections within their class, year level, learning and beyond.

Teaching and Learning

Our Primary School team is actively incorporating the School’s Reconciliation Plan into the Primary Years Programme of Inquiry. This involves helping students view their learning through multiple perspectives. For example, Year 5 students will benefit from a Cultural Educator from NITA during their excursions to kunanyi/Mt Wellington, enriching their understanding of local Indigenous connections to the land.

Year 6 students have begun their inquiries for the PYP Exhibition, focusing on themes like Youth, Power, Influence and Change. This project will culminate in an Exhibition during Week 10, where students will showcase their learning through various creative presentations. We invite all Friends' community members to join us for the Exhibition on Tuesday 24 September at 6pm.

Early Learning Highlights

“Drawing [and mark-making], creating shapes, outlines and silhouettes, is an investment in the brain.” (Sylvia Ferrara)

In the Early Learning area of the School, we’ve been inspired by a recent Professional Learning Symposium with educators from Reggio Emilia, Italy. This event highlighted the significant role of drawing and mark-making in children's cognitive development. Our educational programs are now brimming with opportunities for children to explore these symbolic and representational forms. In The Nest, children collaborate on a large mark-making canvas, while the Starlight children are designing detailed 3D constructions of robots and other creatures.

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)

Our OSHC program has seen growth this semester, often reaching full capacity. The OSHC team is dedicated to creating a safe, secure and supportive environment where children can play and build relationships. Outdoor play is a cornerstone of the program, encouraging children to explore and engage with their environment.

Quaker Meeting House Gatherings

This term, our Meeting House Gatherings will focus on the Quaker testimony of Earthcare or Stewardship. Students will reflect on their relationship with the natural world and their responsibility to protect it for future generations.

We’ll draw inspiration from stories of young environmental advocates and discuss ways to be responsible stewards of both our school and the natural world.

Child Safeguarding

Child safeguarding remains a priority this term. We continue to enhance protective factors and support students' wellbeing through programs like the SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY GritFit Kids Program and our annual Growing Up Programs. During National Child Protection Week in early September, we will dedicate a week to highlight and reinforce our commitment to child safeguarding.

Excursions

This term’s excursions include diverse and engaging experiences:

Year 2: Day of Poo at Waterworks Reserve

Year 3: Hobart Rivulet exploration

Year 4: Seven Mile Beach and Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre

Year 5: kunanyi/Mt Wellington and Port Arthur

Kindergarten: Weekly Earthcare Days at Linear Park

Co-Curricular Activities

Clubs: Our Co-curricular Clubs program is in full swing, offering a range of cross-year level activities during break times, such as knitting, crocheting, dungeons and dragons, Auslan, yoga, pokemon drawing, lego mindstorms and scooter club. Students can join clubs based on their interests and we encourage you to discuss these opportunities with your child’s teacher.

Sport: The co-curricular sports program continues to thrive. Term 1 saw participation in tennis, cricket and girls' soccer, with the introduction of the JSSATIS Girls Soccer League boosting participation. Term 2 included soccer, hockey, netball and water polo. With the influence of the JackJumpers, basketball participation has surged and matches and clinics are held regularly.

Music: Our vibrant music program offers numerous opportunities for students to collaborate and perform. With various ensembles, bands and choirs available, we encourage students to explore their musical interests. Please reach out to our music staff for more information.

We look forward to another engaging and productive term, working together to support our students in their growth and learning. Thank you for your continued partnership in our school community!
