Newman Symposium
Mrs Kate Zilich
At St Martha's, we celebrate the achievements and growth of our students. Each year in bringing together the Newman Symposium, we take time to look back at how we have catered for high ability learners while supporting students’ learning needs.
Through the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program, St Martha’s offers many opportunities for students to develop their skills and talents. Teachers provide programs which deliver a range of appropriately challenging learning tasks and students move through their learning at a pace and level of complexity that matches their readiness and ability. Carefully planned pre-assessment tasks provide teachers with data to allow appropriate adjustments to process, product, content and pace of learning.
Here at St Martha’s, all students are encouraged to challenge themselves and take academic risks. We focus on the strive and achieve elements of our school's motto. The Symposium was a celebration of student growth in one or more domains including intellectual, creative, social and physical.
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 shared some of their learning in each of the Key Learning Areas and there were musical performances by the Extension String Ensemble, Choir and a piano solo by Adam Z (Year 6). Displayed around the hall were a sample of artworks by our students and we celebrated our students' sporting achievements for 2023.
It was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their gifts and talents with the school community. Thank you to the students and teachers involved in preparing the Symposium and the families who joined us on the day.
