Have Sum Fun Online

Over the past few weeks, our Year 8 Maths Extension students have been competing in the Have Sum Fun Online mathematics problem-solving competition, joining students from across Australia.

The 2024 Have Sum Fun Online competition was a fantastic experience for all those involved. The students were presented with a series of challenging maths problems that pushed them to think creatively and collaborate in small groups. To succeed, they had to explore innovative approaches to solving complex problems. The competition also provided valuable opportunities for students to develop teamwork and communication skills as they worked together to tackle each challenge.

A special congratulations goes to Chess Brodalka, Viraaj Thind, Adrian Mok, and Lucas Vojkovic for achieving the highest score among our eight school teams. This is an even more impressive achievement considering that, during one of the weeks, Chess was the only student in his group! As a reward, they will each receive a winner’s canteen voucher. Well done to all involved!

Academic Excellence Program

This term, our group focused on key factors for success, particularly grit and perseverance. Students had the opportunity to watch Angela Duckworth’s TED Talk, which highlighted the idea that you don’t have to be the most intelligent student to excel—you just need the perseverance to keep going, even when faced with challenges. We also explored Carol Dweck’s concept of the Growth Mindset, emphasizing the importance of being open to learning new skills in order to achieve your goals.

We hope that these insights will help students grow both now and in the future.

For our Term Four project, the students have chosen to take on the challenge of Shark Tank! In groups, they will "invent" a product or process aimed at enhancing life at the College, then pitch their ideas to our very own "Sharks," who will decide whether to invest in their concept. We've already seen some creative and innovative ideas, and we're excited to hear the final pitches in the coming weeks!
