National Recycling Week

St Norbert College has become a powerhouse at recycling! Just some of the items that are getting a second life through the hard work of the Climate Canons are paper, cardboard, containers for change, pens, bottle tops, can ring pulls, blister packs, batteries, jars and so much more.

On Wednesday 13th November, the Climate Canons hosted activities that involved learning about where our waste goes and what bins to recycle waste. We also hosted a Golden Waste hunt, where pieces of gold rubbish were placed around the Quads to be found and thrown away properly, students finding these pieces won a prize.

Three golden pieces of rubbish were hidden somewhere in the school grounds. Students who located them won a prize. Congratulations to Sam Bell (Yr 11) Blaise Stancil and Jake Ieraci (Yr 11) and Sebastian Rosevear (Yr 9) for locating the golden rubbish.

Since the campaign was established in 1996, National Recycling Week is held during the second week of November. This year, NRW will be from 11 - 17 November. The focus is on the waste hierarchy – reduce, reuse, recycle. There are LOTS of ways you can get involved and help reduce the amount of waste going into landfill:

  • Limit your use of single-use and disposable products and choose alternatives which can be used again.
  • Opt for products with minimal packaging where possible.
  • When buying fruit and vegetables, put them into your trolley rather than plastic bags.
  • If you don't read advertising mail, put a sign on your letterbox.
  • Roll aluminium foil into a ball and place it in a recycling bin, even if it has food stuck to it.
  • Give unwanted clothes, household items, furniture or appliances to family or friends, or donate them to charities.
  • Find out what drop-off and recycling facilities are available in your local area. Contact your local council. They may collect other items for recycling, including mobile phones and printer cartridges.
