What is a GEM Chat?
GEM Chats are conversation prompts on the principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. A GEM Chat can be a 5 minute conversation to reinforce each concept to ensure that your child can continue to practise engaging with strategies that will support their development of resilience. When we have GEM Chats with children at school, we focus on a prompt and discuss as a group. Engaging in GEM Chats with your child at home will enable you to model the language and ‘think aloud’ your inner thoughts that will support your child to scan for positives to enhance their wellbeing, leading to positive mental health. Here are some ideas for prompts to discuss the concept of empathy with your child. All it takes is 5 minutes per day to support your child to begin seeing the expression of empathy in their daily lives as a positive and helpful strategy that can contribute to their wellbeing and resilience.
