Early Years Athletics

Students from Early Years to Year 2 had a fantastic morning at the Early Years Athletics Carnival last Thursday.  After postponing their event from the Primary Athletics Carnival last term, we were blessed with a beautiful day for racing, throwing and excitement.  The students did an amazing job in all their events; trying so hard, working together as a team, and cheering their house team mates.

Thanks to the Year 10 Child Care VET class who also did an amazing job running the field events and supporting teachers and to all the parents and spectators that came along to cheer on the children.

Primary Interschool Athletics

The Primary Athletics team competed in their second event on Thursday 7 November at the Domain Athletics Centre, in the JSSATIS (Independent Schools) Athletics Carnival.   Well done to all the girls for trying their best and representing the College so well.  Ribbon winners included:

State High School Year 7/8 Netball Championships

A talented group of Year 7 and 8 students travelled to the Silverdome in Launceston last Tuesday to compete in the Year 7/8 State Netball Championships, following their 2nd place finish in the regional titles last term.

The team had an early start, but were excited for the road trip.  First match was against the highly fancied Burnie High School.  Burnie raced away to a strong start, with Mount Carmel playing catch up and struggling to close the gap.  Burnie went on to win 26-18.  The second game was a close encounter against Prospect High, until they edged away in the second half to win 31–25. This resulted in a 5th place play-off match against Launceston Church Grammar, which was a thriller.  Mount Carmel were down by a goal or two at every change, but found that bit extra in the last quarter to win the match 20-19.

Well done to Year 8 students Ruby Duggan, Scarlett Henderson, Ruby Fishwick, Eleanor Williams and Poppy Wilson, and Year 7 students Isabelle Adams, Scarlett Allie, Isla Armstrong, Willo O’Neill and Navya Rawat. Thanks to Ms Larratt for coaching the team.

Regional Basketball Championships

Over recent weekends, the College has been represented by teams at the Regional Basketball Tournament.  Below is a summary of the teams and their results.

Year 3/4 Division 3 : 9/10 November

The weekend was a great learning curve for many that are new to basketball, and the development was evident as the matches progressed.  The team started the tournament with some big losses on Saturday, but were oh so close on Sunday morning, defeated 19-18 by St Mary’s.  Sunday afternoon’s game was the highlight with a 36-6 win over Sacred Heart Yellow.  Layla Cranefield top scored with a massive 26 points.

Players included Year 3 student Lilly Sonners-Pullen and Year 4 students Layla Cranefield, Ella Lagerewskij, Sophie Alice, Freya Finlayson, Trixie Barclay and Olivia Ribbon.  Special thanks to Year 9 students Antonette Conrades who continued to Coach after the JSSATIS roster, including lunch time training and Stella Cranefield for assisting and refereeing, and Manager, Lisa Cranefield for her wonderful support in the lead up to and over the weekend.

Year 5/6 Division 2 : 26/27 October

It was a similar scenario for the Year 5/6 team competing in the Division 2 competition.  Tough opening matches, made scoring a challenge, but as the team started to gel together, the baskets started to follow.  Game 3 was a close 26-20 loss to St Cuthbert’s, and the final game against Lindisfarne saw an outstanding 26-12 win against Lindisfarne Primary.

Year 7/8 Division 2 : 16/17 November

The Year 7/8 team enjoyed a really even draw for their tournament weekend.  The team had some challenges with personnel changes in the lead up to the tournament, so did a remarkable job with all things considered.  They finished in 3rd, and only narrowly missed out on a spot in the Grand Final.

Game 1 – MCC def SMC Nano 39-35

Game 2 – MKC Red def MCC 36-14

Game 3 – MCC def HCHS 18-16

Game 4 – CAL def MCC 33-25

Special thanks to Josh and Ash Nally that coached and managed both the Year 7/8 and 5/6 teams.  Josh gave up many hours to take trainings in the lead up to both tournaments, and we thank him for his expertise and calm manner with the teams, with wonderful support and organisation from Ash.  We are very fortunate for your involvement.

Year 9/10 Division 1 : 16/17 November

This year the Year 9/10 Girls Tournament was in one division, with two pools. Mount Carmel were in Pool B with Mackillop, Kingston and Taroona.  As it turned out, the first match against Mackillop was the important one. Mount Carmel seemed to control the match but were unable to sink the baskets.  After only scoring 3 points in the first half, it was catch up from there.  Eventually it looked like Eva Schulze had scored the equaliser, until Mackillop shot a 3 pointer with only seconds to go. Losing this match resulted in Mount Carmel finishing 2nd in Pool B, and playing top of Pool A and eventual tournament winners St Mary’s. Losing this match put Mount Carmel in play off for 3rd against Mackillop.  After another struggle early, Mount Carmel started to find the net and ran out winners, claiming 3rd place, and earning a spot in the State Final.  Unfortunately, with player unavailability they are unable to attend this year.

Game 1 – MKC Blue def MCC 26–23

Game 2 – MCC def KHS 53–21

Game 3 – MCC def THS 66–10

Semi Final – SMC Blue def MCC 32–18

Play-Off 3rd – MCC def MKC Blue 27–18

Special thanks to coaches Mrs Kate Fazackerley and Mr Damian Lowe for giving up their lunch hours and weekend to coach the team, and Manager Lisa Cranefield who is all over the team organisation for these basketball filled weekends.

Secondary Tennis Grand Finalists

Congratulations to the Year 10 Tennis team of Zali Elliott, Ashlan Ryan and Evie Bosworth (Year 8) who have finished the season second on the ladder, earning a place in the Grand Final on Monday. The team will play Friends’ Red, who have been undefeated this season.

The Year 7 team has also enjoyed a strong season in the SSATIS Year 7 roster, finishing in second place in their pool and playing off for 3rd.  The have won matches against Fahan White 5-1, St Mary’s Green 5–1 and Friends Blue 5–1. Their only loss was against Fahan Orange in Round 1, who are undefeated. Goodluck to both teams in their Finals.
