Microfiction Competition 2024

Microfiction Realised!

Last Friday our talented Microfiction writers and artists were presented with a personal copy of the publication at assembly. The Microfiction competition is in its third year and is growing in popularity. This year saw a total of 240 student entries in the first round, with 30 students selected to compete in the live Grand Final held in the Senior Library. The students were asked to be both concise and creative through the composition of original stories of no more than 100 words. Other than the word limit, these stories had to include specific actions and words.

The Microfiction publication is a collection of standout entries from the Senior School, Primary School, and teaching staff, complemented by artworks commissioned by the Visual Arts Department and completed by their talented students.

The prompts for each round are below:

First Round

Required Word – “Rhythm”

Required Action – “Restoring”

Final Round

Required Word – “Remedy”

Required Action – “Dissolving”

Please take the opportunity to read and view their efforts by clicking on the link below.

The Jolly Man in Red is jolly well read!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the SRC this week. Students have been greeted by jolly old St Nick himself on arrival at the library. We have lots of new titles to browse and borrow for holiday reading and students have been encouraged to take a few books home for the Summer break.

Hat, sunnies, towel, surfboard, sunscreen, book… don’t forget to tick all the boxes when heading out for some fun in the sun these holidays.

Also, please double check in lockers and at home for any overdue books and return them to the library before you head out the gate in Week 8.

Merry Christmas.

Visual Arts

Year 5 students created cardboard sculptures inspired by Sri-Lankan Australian artist Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran whose contemporary art practice challenges ideas about monuments. The students incorporated layering, textures, vibrant colour, and extravagant detail to portray an abstracted self-portrait.

2025 Smart Expressions Exhibition

We have the pleasure of announcing that three of the 2024 HSC Visual Arts students have been selected for the 2025 Smart Expressions Exhibition at the Chatswood Concourse.

Fergus Fung, Max Lenton and Noah Elms all painted large scale works for their HSC BOW projects. Their works explore the themes of family, music, and the challenges of mental illness.

The exhibition is a showcase and acknowledgement of local North Shore high school students for the diligent commitment and sustained effort to the Visual Arts throughout their HSC year.

The exhibition runs at the Art Space in the Concourse from 27 February – 23 March 2025.
