Democracy, Community and Me incursion

By Clara, Khang, Lucas & Mahdi 4A

Last week was a blast. We learned about democracy and we had a role play in the incursion where there was 6 candidates, healthy, brick, cabbage, chief, flower, and court.

The whole class got to vote and at the end someone was elected mayor. Then some people got chosen to be councilors. The mayor discussed a topic about whether dogs should be on lead or off lead.

Three councilors wanted to keep dogs on lead and the other three disagreed with the idea. Since the voting was a tie of three to three, the mayor chose the fate of the law. In the voting everyone got a slip of paper that had all 6 candidates on it and you numbered them 1st to 6th. The mayor chose that dogs should be off lead. If you were chosen to be the mayor, you would wear a fancy outfit. They also talked what is democracy and how there is 3 different levels of government, local, state, and federal in Australia.

This incursion taught us about the decisions of what the levels of government does. We also learned about how voting works in Australia.
