Over the last month, the Environmental Council has been busy continuing ongoing projects. The Council has been busy collecting 10c recyclable bottles from across the school, with collection bins located in the Quad, Oval, Rosary, Canteen, and Yirindaali room. This project has resulted in the collection of a large number of bottles, which resulted in the filling of the six 120L collection bins (as shown in the photo). This should amount to over $300 going to St Vincent De Paul projects. We have also been continuing the regeneration seeding projects, extracting and replanting seeds with the intention of increasing the numbers of native plants into the area.
Clean up Australia Day was the most recent project the Environmental Council completed, cleaning litter and rubbish from the gully, and collecting rubbish across the school. This project was an amazing success. A huge thank you to the 32 participants, both within and outside of the Environmental Council, who took time out of their classes to help work towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment. A special mention to Vice President Lauren Barnes, who also attended the Rotary Club of Tamworth First Light clean up on the Sunday. The senior volunteers were amazing leaders on the day.
Over the next month, the Environmental Council plans to continue 10c recycling and plant the next generation of seeds into pots and sort them so we can replenish seed stock. We will also plant new seedlings along the school boundary, and Indigenous food into the gardens (such as button grass). The school recycling teams are now in action, as every week, volunteers empty the paper recycle bins in the classroom.
For those who want to make a difference to the environment, come and join the Environmental Council meetings on Thursday break two.
