Principal's Report

Dear Families,

As we near the end of term 1 and approach Easter it reminds us of the importance to stop once in a while and reflect. This lenten period calls us to pause, refocus, and embrace the themes of renewal, sacrifice, and hope. As a school community, we have journeyed through this season with a spirit of prayer, kindness, and generosity, preparing our hearts for the joy of Easter. In the busyness of assessments, events, and daily commitments, Lent invites us to deepen our relationship with God and others, reminding us of the power of faith and compassion. As we conclude Term 1, may we carry the lessons of this sacred time forward, embracing the message of Easter—new beginnings, forgiveness, and the promise of everlasting love.

Over the past few weeks, our students have participated in a wide range of activities, including Character Builders, Year 7 Camp, NSW Rugby Union visit, the Inter-School Chess Challenge, Tamworth Show, the Federation Cup Debating, Ash Wednesday Liturgy, Gamilaraay Language sessions, the Year 7 Music Presentation, the Year 7-10 Brothers Program, the University of Newcastle Health Careers Expo, Women's Day on Country, the Science and Engineering Competition, NSW Cricket, Child Studies midwife visit, NAPLAN, Mathematics competition, Diocesan Touch Football, and the Environmental Club.

The College is committed to providing diverse opportunities for all students, allowing them to develop their skills, explore their interests, and showcase their talents.

In today’s digital world, young people have unprecedented access to technology, which can be both a powerful learning tool and a source of distraction. It is important that students develop healthy and responsible digital habits, balancing screen time with other activities. We encourage parents to set clear boundaries around device use at home, such as establishing tech-free zones during meals and before bedtime, encouraging open discussions about online behaviour, and using parental controls where necessary. Promoting offline activities like reading, exercise, and family time can also help create a balanced approach to technology use. By working together, we can support our young people in developing the skills they need to use technology safely and effectively.

I would like to thank the following parents and staff for volunteering their time to form our School Advisory Council (SAC) for 2025; Jule George, Belinda Tyrrell, Magott Taggart, Luke Wakely, Grant Lee, Felicity Sawtell, Nicole Anderson and Fr. Chris. The School Advisory Council supports the school and parish with the mission of Catholic education in the school. Working with the Principal and the Parish Priest, the members of the Council provide guidance and support to the wider school community.

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 students had an unforgettable adventure at Tea Gardens Bush Camp, filled with excitement, personal growth, and plenty of fun. Over the course of the camp, students took on a range of outdoor activities, from canoeing and team challenges to high ropes courses and the infamous giant swing. These experiences provided fantastic opportunities for students to stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones, particularly when facing their fears of heights. The support and encouragement from peers and teachers alike helped many students achieve things they never thought possible.

A huge thank you to our dedicated staff—Mrs Jones, Mr Dean, Mr Kelly, Mrs O’Neill, Mrs McCabe, Miss Greet, Ms Smith, Mr Frew, Mr Vella, and Mr Chambers—who generously took time away from their families to ensure this camp was a success. Their enthusiasm, care, and willingness to join in the fun made all the difference in creating lasting memories for our students.

ANZAC Day – Friday, 25 April 2025

We will gather in Bourke Street at 9:30 am. All students attending must wear their full winter uniform. Hoodies are not permitted for the ANZAC Day March.

As this is our last Newsletter for term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of our College community. Your partnership and encouragement are deeply valued, and we are grateful for the role you play in your child’s education.

May this Easter bring you and your family joy, peace, and the blessings of Christ’s resurrection. Wishing you a happy and holy Easter.

Warm regards,

Michael Whitton

College Principal
