Year 9 Science

As part of their Global Systems unit, the Year 9 I&E students took to the school yard to explore how scientists model and track environmental data. Using random sampling, they carefully counted blades of grass within small, selected areas and scaled up their results to estimate the total number of grass blades covering the entire BSC oval. Their final, agreed-upon estimate? A staggering 200 million grass blades!

This hands-on activity gave students a real-world glimpse into the techniques scientists use to monitor ecosystems, reinforcing the importance of data collection, sampling methods, and environmental modeling in understanding our world.
