From the Classroom - M5 (Jaymie)

M5 has had a great start to the year. So far, Term One has been filled with lots of learning and fun! 

 

This term, we have started a new Literacy program called InitiaLit. The lessons are a structured approach to teaching phonics and other important literacy skills. 

Each morning, we start with a review of letters and sounds. The lesson then goes on to focus on some ‘tricky words’ (non-decodable high-frequency words). We talk about the tricky parts of the word and practise writing them on whiteboards. 

During the explicit lesson, students are exposed to words such as phoneme, digraph, compound word, noun, verb, adjective and more! The students have been loving learning using the proper terminology. 

 

Students then complete an activity based on the lesson. See some examples of our fantastic work below:

 

Once this is finished, we read a book as a whole class with a different focus each day. Sometimes it is about summarising the story, learning the meaning of new words or making connections. At the end of the week, students complete a craft activity based on the book we have read for the week. Please see our amazing craft displays below:

So far, M5 are thoroughly enjoying the InitiaLit program and having the opportunity to learn about all aspects of Literacy!
