Around our level
In Year 3 and 4, we have been learning about fractions. This has been an exciting journey that helped us understand how to break numbers into parts. We started by learning about numerators and denominators—the numerator tells us how many parts we have, while the denominator tells us how many equal parts make up a whole.
We explored unit fractions, where the numerator is 1, helping us see the smallest part of a fraction. To help visualise fractions, we used different models. The area model involved cutting paper squares to show how fractions represent portions of a shape. The set model used counters to divide groups into equal parts. These hands-on activities made fractions easier to understand.
Using number lines, we learned to count in fractions and made models with paper circles. This showed us how fractions fit together in order, just like whole numbers. We also combined fractions, discovering that two quarters make one half and other similar relationships.
To apply our learning creatively, we designed flags where each colour or design covered one quarter of the space. We calculated the total number of squares and determined how many were needed for each fraction. Through these activities, we built a strong foundation in fractions and their real-world applications.
Fractions can be larger than I thought. They are hard to name sometimes. - Bardia D
The bottom of the fraction is the denominator and the top of the number is the numerator. - Harvey W
When we divide a whole into fractions, the pieces have to be equal. - Eva H
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below students' certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
