Learning in action

Reading

Last week students listened to a variety of personal narratives and identified vocabulary that was used to help them visualise in detail what was happening. This week students continued to look at different personal narratives and explored how phrases or words are used to let the reader know what they are feeling without naming an emotion. Students had to identify the emotion and articulate the part in the narrative that supported their thinking.

Students will be learning to retell information by sequencing key events within a personal narrative and making predictions.

Writing

Our writing focus last week was continuing to develop students understanding of conjunctions and how to apply these within sentences. Students used picture prompts to create sentences that included the conjunctions but, so and or. Students have been planning and drafting their own personal narratives, transferring their ideas from dot points into sentences, following the narrative structure of first, then and next. Students learnt about what an article is and when to use 'a' and 'an'.

Maths:

This fortnight we began our fractions unit and students learnt about what halves, quarters thirds and eighths were of shapes and collections. Students were given shapes with a fraction shown and they had to identify what the numerator and denominator were and record the fraction. Our applied topic for the remainder of the term is shapes and this week students learnt about 2D shapes, how many sides they have, what type of side and the number of vertices
