Semester 2 has seen the exciting start of Bemin Secondary College's Music program!
A highlight for the Performing Arts department and our Year 10 students, has been the first ever Bemin SC Assembly Performance, by Jester, Gabriel, and Youngsen (pictured above). Students played the modern-Elvis-esque song 'Until I Found You', by Stephen Sanchez. Gabriel led the band with his late-50s inspired vocals, Jester played a bright and beachy electric guitar part, and Youngsen capped it off with his rock solid drumming. Our Year 10 cohort were a respectful and supportive audience.
More than their expert playing, what was most striking was their: confidence, drive for excellence, and willingness to say 'yes'. In the face of what could've been an intimidating first-ever school performance, these students sought and implemented feedback, gave up multiple recess and lunch breaks to practice, and embodied professionalism in all they did.
Students should be encouraged to email Mr. G through Compass, if they are interested in performing at the end of Term 4.
Year 10 'Soundscapes and Spotlights' students are well into practicing for their end of term performance assessment. Students have assembled bands, picked cover songs, planned how to utilise practice time successfully, and have been putting in the hard work each class. Our fledgling musicians have also been putting pen to paper and learning the fundamentals of music theory. I'm repeatedly impressed with the skill level of the students, the natural ear they have for music, and most of all, the respect they have been treating the music equipment with. Well done to our musicians for exemplifying our school values of 'Respect', 'Excellence', and 'Community'.
It has been a very exciting start for our Year 7 & 10 Drama students this term. Our Year 10 budding actors are deep into their 'Character Development' unit where they are honing their expressive skills to bring their characters to life. Meanwhile, our Year 7 emerging performers are in the midst of their 'Mime' unit where they are exploring physical storytelling as they create performances inspired by Indigenous Dreaming Stories. Across both year levels, their work has been very inspiring as they rehearse for their upcoming performance assessments where they will showcase their hard work in front of their peers.
In other exciting news, we have just installed brand-new lighting bars in both of our Drama studios! The students have thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the lights, using them to create different moods and atmospheres to enhance their performances. It's been fantastic to see them engage with this new technology and use it to enhance their creative work. Here are some action shots from both campuses!
The excitement doesn't stop there... The Year 10 Drama students are about to head into the city to see Victoria Opera's musical theatre production of Sweeney Todd at The Arts Centre Melbourne. This is an incredible opportunity for our students to experience a live professional theatre production and see how the acting and design elements come together to shape the production.
Finally - the Year 7 Drama Club launched this term and it has been lots of fun exploring various theatre-sports activities and seeing students engage with their peers through our fortnightly lunch time club! This is open to all Year 7 students and occurs on Monday's at lunch time in Week A.
We look forward to continue working with our talented students to provide exciting performing arts opportunities!

PS: 2/2 performing arts staff ran in the 100m Staff vs Students relay (second place isn't too shabby!).
