Australian Percussion Eisteddfod

Last weekend (2-5 August) our percussion ensemble, Asymmetry, performed in the 25th Annual Australian Percussion Eisteddfod. Held in Sydney at Barker College and Abbotsleigh School, this prestigious event brought together percussionists from around the country and provided an opportunity to listen to other students in solo and ensemble categories and enjoy the efforts of each competitor as they performed their pieces to the best of their ability. The level of performance was incredibly high, and our students were up to it!

With international adjudicator Dr Michael Crawford from the University of North Texas, sitting alongside esteemed Australian percussionists Robert Oetomo (Synergy Percussion Ensemble) and Allan Watson (Opera Australia Orchestra) and drumkit maestro Gordon Rytmeister – our students had the opportunity to showcase how The Gap SHS music department rolls!

Congratulations to Mr Jeff Jarrott and his ensemble of 15 students who placed third in this year’s A Grade ensemble division with their performance of Catching Shadows (Ivan Trevino) and Cyclone (Jim Casella). Your performance was spectacular and well deserved your gold award and place on the podium! We cannot wait to see you play again at the Fanfare State Gala on Friday 16th August.

Congratulations also to Stephen J and Jayden F who received a silver award for their 4-mallet duet in the A Grade Marimba section and, silver and gold awards, respectively for their A Grade drumkit performances. Also, congratulations to Michael Khoo for his bronze award for his B Grade drumkit solo.

A very successful weekend!

Three Art Exhibitions, One Night Only

Our Tula Art Gallery showcased three exhibitions for one night only on August 2nd, with a showing of recent works from Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 Visual Art classes. The units of work featured in this exhibition were from the Year 10 Human Condition unit; Year 9 – GeoForms: recent ceramic work program; and the Year 7/8 I am free – painting and ceramic artwork coursework.

Visual Art Studio with Carolyn V Watson on Friday afternoon is into its third session now with students working on armatures for their sculptural forms. Carolyn is a Brisbane based artist who works across the mediums of painting, drawing and sculptural assemblage. The students have started to develop a series of well-constructed armatures and are now considering the choice of materials - wire, plaster bandage, air hardening clay, thread, timber, dowel, cane  - to evolve their forms.
