Girls succeed in sport

Girl Power at the All-Schools Badminton Championships. The girls' badminton teams of Westall Secondary recently had the exciting opportunity to compete at the All-Schools Championship, hosted by Badminton Victoria at the prestigious Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in Middle Park. This tournament saw our Year 7, 8, and Intermediate girls take to the courts against some of the top players from schools across the state, including renowned private schools such as Penleigh Grammar, Sacred Heart, Mac Robertson College, East Doncaster, Huntingtower, and Glen Waverley College. The Year 7 team included:

  • Sthruthi Chintalapati (Captain),
  • Milla Tran,
  • Arjelee Tapic,
  • Maya Lacap,
  • Amirah Sangil,
  • Liliana Lazo.

The Year 8 team featured:

  • Havya Patel (Captain),
  • Xin Yu,
  • Xin Fei,
  • Hadia Rahimi,
  • Hannah Dinh.

The Intermediate team comprised:

  • Muy Hour,
  • Khushi Pokar (Captain),
  • Sofia Ho,
  • Ree Kha,
  • Amy Tran.

While our teams did not manage to win any games in their groupings, the experience was invaluable. The purpose of this championship was not solely about victory, but about giving our students exposure to high-level badminton and the chance to challenge themselves against more seasoned competitors.  Many were year 11s.

Our girls showed incredible determination and perseverance throughout the tournament, learning first-hand the demands of elite competition. Despite the results, they walked away with improved skills, a deeper understanding of game strategies, and most importantly, the experience of playing in a professional setting against top-ranked players. Their positive attitude and sportsmanship were recognized by coaches and officials alike.

This experience is only the beginning for our girls' badminton journey. The lessons they learned will surely fuel their motivation, and we are immensely proud of their efforts. Competing at this level, especially against such high-caliber schools, is an achievement in itself, and we look forward to seeing how they will build on this experience in the years to come. The Year 7 and 8 girls, in particular, are eager to continue training and have already begun setting new goals as they head into 2025.

Westall Secondary College Boys Shine at State Badminton Tournament at MSAC

On Thursday, 5th September 2024, our boys’ badminton team represented Westall Secondary College at the State All-School Badminton Competition, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), for the very first time. Competing against over 25 schools from across the state, the team demonstrated incredible skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Despite missing our top player, the boys powered through the early rounds with a great display of teamwork and enthusiasm. The team advanced to the quarter-finals, ultimately finishing in 4th place—a fantastic achievement given the high level of competition and the fact that this was our debut in the tournament.

It was a day filled with excitement and fun, as the students enjoyed every moment on and off the court at MSAC. Their outstanding performance reflects their hard work and dedication to the sport, and we are immensely proud of them.

This result is a testament to the resilience and talent of our team, and we look forward to seeing them build on this success in future competitions. Congratulations to the team for their remarkable achievement!

Intermediate Boys Basketball

The intermediate boys basketball team ventured down to Dandenong Basketball Stadium for their annual round robin tournament. The team played 5 games throughout an action-packed day of hoops. The boys competed fearlessly, getting better and better each game. Our team consisted largely of year 9 students, whilst a special shout out to year 8 student Franz Rioflorido for playing above his age group and being a key contributor for the team. The boys saved their best performance until last, when a shoot-out with Brighton resulted in a nail-biting 5 point loss. The entire team put their best foot forward and represented the school with pride.

Standout performers on the day included Noah Moya, Ayaan Kim and Mithona 'June' Sopheak. However, all 10 members of the team were able to score a basket, showcasing everyones commitment to selflessness and teamwork. Great work boys and I look forward to what you can achieve in Basketball next year!
