NEW - Author Pen Pals

Sacred Heart School is fortunate to again be part of the Author Pen Pal program https://www.authorpenpals.com/ . It is a fantastic initiative that helps to engage students with literacy by connecting them with authors and/or illustrators across Australia who share their love of literature and tips for writing and drawing through old fashioned snail mail!

This year, one author/illustrator has been connected to each cohort (Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 have the same pen pal). They are:

Foundation – Emma Bowd

Grade 1 - Liz Ledden

Grade 2 - Rhonda Ooi

Grade 3/4 - Dee White

Grade 5/6 - Dee White

Students will soon be introduced to their class’s pen pal through the author/illustrator’s introductory letter. Mrs. Fidock has been in touch with the pen pals, and all the introductory letters are on the way! All letters (received and sent) are read by Mrs. Fidock to assure they are suitable. The students are taught/reminded to converse in their reply letter, e.g. answer and ask questions, and to not include personal information, such as full name, address, or telephone number. Many of the questions asked by the students revolve around writing and reading, e.g. What is your favourite book?; How long did it take you to write your book?; Where do you like to write?; Do you draw pictures for other authors? There are always other questions they want to know, e.g. What's your favourite sport? Do you have any pets? Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Many pen pals will send activities, like Rebecca Timmis (the Grade 1/2 pen pal from 2024) who sent illustration activities. Letters arrive and are sent approximately once a Term. The library planning of lessons involves the content of letters received. We hope your student/s shares information about their pen pal, and we encourage you to ask them questions about the program.

If you would like further information, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Fidock.

NEW - Fortnight in Foundation

Foundation students have been settling into school over the past few weeks. We have been learning about routines and expectations and made Quiet Cub crowns to promote using inside voices.

We have also been at school for more than 10 days. On the days that the number ends in zero, Zero the Hero visits our classroom to learn more about numbers in Mathematics. The students were so excited to make their number chain last Friday.

Lastly, our outdoor area behind our classrooms was enjoyed by the Buddies Monday afternoon as they engaged in play, chalk drawing and games.

NEW - Shrove Tuesday

This year Shrove Tuesday is on the 4th of March. We will be cooking pancakes for the students at school during the day. Any parents who are able to help with the cooking of pancakes, could you please let the office know. Parent helpers will need to have a current Working with Children Check and have completed the induction module.

The Induction Module is available on the school website for parents to complete.

If families are able to donate a pancake shaker this would be greatly appreciated.

Any children with dietary requirements will be catered for separately.

Magnify Sandhurst: Every Student, Every Teacher, Every School, Every Day

Variation in educational practices between schools and between classes, has long been spoken about – both formally and informally. Magnify Sandhurst is an important initiative that has been developed and rolled out in all Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sandhurst, that aims to ensure this variability is negligible.

Magnify Sandhurst combines evidence-based practices in teaching and learning to support each student's unique needs, strengths, and goals. The Magnify program focuses on strengthening core areas like literacy and numeracy, building supportive classroom environments, and integrating Catholic values in daily learning. As a Diocese of educators, we are committed to improving outcomes and providing a program where every student can flourish, inspired by the mantra, "Every Student, Every Teacher, Every School, Every Day!"

Here at Sacred Heart School, we are very well placed to embed Magnify Sandhurst into our current personalised and evidence-based learning programs. Using the latest neuroscience and a structured, knowledge-rich curriculum, we will continue to ensure students build deep understanding and are given the very best learning opportunities which they richly deserve.

Stay tuned for more Magnify Sandhurst updates and photos.
