Physical Education Term 1 Overviews

Prep | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. They will be developing the understanding of the importance that they must listen and follow instructions, be respectful to teachers, their peers and community members as well as understand how to be safe in class and specifically the PE spaces. In the first half of the term, Prep will play games such as Mirror, Red Light, Green Light, Yellow Light, and Simon Says with focus on them adjusting to the school values and rules. In the second half of term, students will begin to learn fundamental movement skills as well as moving, laughing and connecting with other students. This will build upon their growing confidence with communication and movement skills. |
Year 1 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. In this first half of term, students will be working on attentiveness, listening skills and teamwork making sure they understand it is important to stay focused, listen, follow instructions and collaborate with classmates. This will be taught as well as learnt through class discussions and mini games such as, Red Light, Green Light, Simon Says, Blind obstacle course and Mirror game. In the second half of term students will use their prior knowledge to transition into Challenge and Adventure Activities. Students learn to cooperate, communicate, and work as a team through fun and interactive group games.

Year 2 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space respectfully. In this first half of term students will be working on teamwork and collaboration with their fellow peers by participating in multiple mini games that encourages them to communicate and find solutions as a team. In the second half of term, students transition to Challenge and Adventure Activities which builds upon the skills from learning to learn into developing teamwork and communication skills by collaborating in fun problem-solving challenges.

Year 3 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. In the first half of term, students will be working on teamwork and collaboration with their fellow peers by participating in multiple mini games that encourages them to communicate and find solutions as a team. In the second half of term, students transition to Challenge and Adventure Activities where students reflect on their prior learning, apply what they have learnt and expand on their knowledge by continuing to develop teamwork, strategy, and communication through engaging, team-based minor games.

Year 4 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. In the first half of term, students will be working on teamwork and collaboration with their fellow peers by participating in multiple mini games that encourages them to communicate and find solutions as a team. In the second half of term, students transition to Challenge and Adventure Activities where a greater emphasis is placed on collaborating in small groups to solve physical challenges, building trust and communication. |
Year 5 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. In the first half of term, students will be working on teamwork and collaboration with their fellow peers by participating in multiple mini games that encourages them to communicate and find solutions as a team. For the second half of term, there will be a transition to Challenge and Adventure Activities where students will further develop leadership, teamwork and strategic roles in small-sided team groups to strengthen group connections. |
Year 6 | This term the focus will start with learning to learn and developing routines, respect to all and transitions around the classes and PE spaces. Students will be introduced to the school values and what is expected of them. Teachers will tell, show and practice with the students lining up to enter and exit the classroom. Walking quietly, respectfully and in their lines throughout the school as well as entering the PE space. In this first half of term, students will be working on teamwork and collaboration with their fellow peers by participating in multiple mini games that encourages them to communicate and find solutions as a team. In the second half of term, students transition to Challenge and Adventure Activities where there will be a greater focus on strengthening leadership skills through a series of inclusive activities and teamwork-focused challenges. |
Physical Education | |
Year 7-9 | During Term 1, students across years 7-9 are refining their fundamental movement skills of running, jumping and throwing through participation in different athletic events such as high jump, long jump, sprints, distance running, shot put and discus. By the end of term one, students in years 7&8 will be able to adapt and perform movement sequences in variety of contexts, demonstrating how the movement elements of time, effort, space, people and objects can enhance performance. Students in year 9 will be able to evaluate their own and others' movement skills and performance and apply feedback to enhance their performance, including the impact of the movement elements of time, effort, space, people and objects. |
Health | |
Year 7 | By the end of term 1, year 7 students will have analysed the different dynamics of families beliefs and cultural practices across cultural groups and their influence on the formation of identity. |
Year 8 | By the end of Term 1 Year 8 students will be able to explain how choices and lifestyle factors impact their health and well-being. They will be able to identify credible health resources and use them to promote increased awareness of health-related programs in their community |
Year 9 | By the end of term 1, Year 9 students will be able to identify complex emotions, evaluate situations, reflect on possible outcomes, and propose appropriate emotional responses to these situations. Students will have further developed their self-regulation skills by refining coping strategies, and they will explore the power of an open mindset. |
SEL program | |
Year 8 | By the end of term one, Year 8 students will have continued to develop their emotional literacy by identifying emotions and proposing strategies that they could implement to aid them in making appropriate emotional responses to challenging situations. |
Interschool Sport | |
Year 7-9 | During term 1, years 7& 8, sports classes will focus on Volleyball, with the 7-9 Boys and Girls representative team tryouts being held earlier this term. The successful students will go on to represent DCC at the upcoming Division Competition. |
