Year 6 Term 1 Curriculum Update

WOMINJEKA

Wominjeka and welcome back to all our new and returning families! We are so proud of our Year 6 students for the way they have embraced the transition back to school, settling into routines with enthusiasm and a strong sense of community. The classrooms are buzzing with excitement as students engage in meaningful learning experiences and share their cultural artefacts, fostering connections and understanding among peers.

Term 1 Learning

Literacy

This term, students will explore emotive vocabulary and imagery through poetry and multimedia narratives by analysing texts in Reading and applying their knowledge and understanding in Writing. They will learn how to craft powerful language and visual storytelling, enhancing their ability to express thoughts and emotions. This ties in with our Unit of Inquiry, where students are reflecting on their digital and real-world identities and considering their role in the online world.

Numeracy

Students have started the year by deepening their understanding of number properties, exploring patterns behind prime and composite numbers and making connections to factors and multiples. They will then move into fractions and decimals, developing a strong foundation in equivalence and estimation, applying their learning to real-world problem-solving.

Inquiry

Students are investigating their place in the digital world, exploring how online and real-world identities shape interactions. Through inquiry, they will examine how to navigate online spaces safely while considering ethical and responsible digital citizenship.

Social & Emotional Learning

Our Learning to Learn Program has been a great success, helping students build confidence in classroom routines and reinforcing our school values. This term, we continue our commitment to fostering a positive learning environment through:

  • SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support) – Encouraging respectful and responsible interactions.
  • PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) – Strengthening relationships and positive social skills.
  • RRRR (Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships) – Understanding emotions, personal strengths, and conflict resolution strategies.

Student Leadership & Engagement

We are excited to announce that SRC representatives have been selected in all classes, ready to take on leadership roles within our school community. Students are also highly engaged with our new Class Dojo system, which teachers are refining to ensure consistency and effectiveness across the cohort.

It has been an exciting start to the year, and we look forward to seeing our Year 6 students continue to thrive!
