SAKGP Garden and Kitchen Programme
News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden
Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday
We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.
No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.
If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)
In the Garden classes, students harvested pumpkins, a variety of tomatoes, celery, silverbeet and eggplant and added compost to the garden beds ready for planting next week.
In Cooking this week Grade 2 and 3 made Potato and Pumpkin Gnocchi (including a GF and fat free version) with Tomato and Herb Sugo
From the garden we used a variety of tomatoes, pumpkin, oregano and parsley.
We also used the tomato passata (the 4/5 Class made) for the Tomato and Herb Sugo
For the Potato and Pumpkin Gnocchi (GF and fat free version) Vega, Ella, Marlin, Bobbie Aleida and their group measured out the GF flours and whisked the egg whites. They did a great job, mashing the cooked potatoes and pumpkin until it was smooth. They then took turns mixing all ingredients together ready to shape the Gnocchi.
For the Potato and Pumpkin Gnocchi, Douglas, Oliver, Percy, and their group peeled the cooked potatoes and took turns with Pete to use the potato ricer to mash the potato. They then worked with Sidney to mix in the pumpkin and add the flour and whisked and mixed in the eggs. They then took turns mixing all ingredients together ready to shape the Gnocchi.
Rui, Johnny, Jayden and their group, used their great knife skills to chop the tomatoes, onions, greens and herbs for the Tomato Sugo. They worked well together to cook the ingredients and added the Tomato passata to make the delicious Tomato Sugo to serve with the gnocchi.
After recess everyone made the Gnocchi, they did a great job, rolling the dough, cutting the dough into 3cm pieces and using a fork to add the texture to the top of the gnocchi.
We also kept the peel from the cooked potato and baked it in the oven for a delicious crunchy potato topping for the dish. A great way to use the food waste instead of throwing it away!
Aleida and Vega and Sidney and Oliver and their groups cooked the Gnocchi in the boiling water until it floated to the surface and then added them and the Tomato Sugo to the baking dishes. Emma’s group cleaned up, set and decorated the table and did a great job, washing and organising the dishes.
Everyone tried the Pumpkin and Potato Gnocchi with the Tomato Sugo and enjoyed it. Well done Grade 2 and 3!
