From the Year 3 Classroom

Reading We are nearly finished reading Yirra and Her Deadly Dog Demon and are eager to find out whether that mischievous dog can finally be trained! This engaging novel has introduced us to a wide range of new vocabulary and offered valuable insights into Indigenous culture.

Writing Over the past fortnight, we’ve continued to strengthen our use of conjunctions—because, but, and so—to create more complex sentences. We've also been practising how to write structured paragraphs, starting with a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details. During our research, we’ve focused on effective note-taking strategies, using keywords, abbreviations, and important dates. Our main writing focus has been on the structure of a Factual Recount, and we’re excited to complete our final piece next week, based on the ANZACs.

Maths We’re wrapping up our short unit on Length this week and will soon begin exploring Patterns. Students have really enjoyed the hands-on activities in this unit. It’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and commitment, especially as they work hard to master their times tables for our class challenge. They should be very proud of their efforts—keep it up!

Inquiry Our curious learners have been busy exploring the power of the sun over the past fortnight, including how to be Sun Smart. We’ve seen some fantastic Sun Smart posters created by our students! This week, we’re diving into how day turns into night and how the seasons change—lots of exciting discoveries ahead!

Religious Education

Our current Source of Life Unit is, ‘Celebrating the Gifts of the Spirit.’  At the moment we are focusing on the Fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control and how we show these fruits in our day to day lives.  Over the coming week we will research a public figure, e.g: Pope Francis, Mother Therese, who displays one of these fruits.
