From the Year 2 Classroom

Week 5 is almost done and dusted, and we are nearly halfway through Term 2. 

The mornings are getting chillier, and the days sometime feels longer.  It is important that the children are wearing warmer clothes in the morning and making sure they are putting any extra clothing in their bags throughout the day.  We have had lots of lost jackets, jumpers and still hats, so please make sure your children have the right clothing with their names clearly named.  If you have a lost  jumper or jacket there are lost property tubs in all areas and at the office, you are welcome to look through these or please let the teachers know as we can do name checks.

In Literacy this fortnight the Year 2's have been focussing on prefixes, suffixes, verbs, verbs and more verbs.  We have been reading both fiction and no fiction texts and looking closely at the features of both, pointing out differences and similarities.   Visualisation is the key reading skill, thinking about what we see when we read and drawing a picture to represent it, also adding descriptive words to these pictures.  The children are smashing their handwriting lately, they are very focussed and we are seeing huge improvements in this area.  We will be asking children to bring in a special small toy or something little that is meaningful to them, as we will be using these in a writing task next week.  These will be needed for Monday.

In Maths we are working on rounding four digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, estimating and comparing length of objects using informal units and also calculating double numbers and adding and subtracting near doubles.  

In Inquiry the children are loving learning more about places around the world.  We are discussing continents, oceans and countries.  Soon they will be focussing more on one specific place that they will be able to research closely. 

In Religion we are beginning a new topic 'What is Baptism'.  During this topic we will discuss the importance of belonging to our family and other small community groups.

Cross Country Fun Run- A reminder that this is on next Thursday 29th May.  The children will need to wear their sports uniform on this day.  The Year 2 events will begin at 10.30. Parents are welcome to come and watch the event to cheer on the kids.
