From the Year 6 Classroom

Dear Year 6 Families,
We’re well into the term now, and it’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and maturity your children are bringing to their learning. Here’s a quick snapshot of what we’ve been working on and what’s coming up in Year 6:
Literacy – Novel Study & History Focus
We are continuing our novel study of Us Mob Walawurru, which has prompted some rich discussions around culture, identity, and connection to land. Alongside this, students have been working on a factual recount focused on the 1967 Referendum. This important piece of Australian history has helped deepen their understanding of civil rights and social change.
Health – Life Relationships Unit
This week we began our first lesson in the Life Relationships unit. The sessions are age-appropriate, respectful, and provide students with a safe space to explore topics around growing up, relationships, and decision-making.
Mathematics – Decimals
We are just about to start a new unit on decimals. Students will be developing their understanding of place value, comparing, ordering, and using decimals in practical contexts. Regular revision of times tables at home is encouraged to support fluency.
Art – One-Point Perspective
In Art, we’re exploring one-point perspective drawing. Students are learning how to create depth and dimension in their artwork using vanishing points and horizon lines—an exciting challenge that’s already producing some impressive results!
Cross Country – Building Stamina
Our school cross country is coming up soon, and we encourage students to start building their running stamina. A few short runs or jogs during the week can make a big difference in helping them feel confident and prepared. We will be supporting this at school as well.
Home Reading – A Priority
We ask that students read at home a minimum of four nights a week for 20 minutes. We understand that after-school commitments can be busy, but regular reading is essential for building fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Please help your child prioritise this vital habit.
As always, thank you for your continued support at home. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to get in touch.
Warm regards,
The Year 6 Team
