From the Year 4 Classroom

In Religion, we have had a very busy and exciting two weeks as we prepare for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. The children receiving the Sacraments will do so in two weeks’ time. In the lead-up, all students have been engaged in learning about the Fruit of the Spirit – love, peace, generosity, faithfulness, joy, gentleness, patience, self-control, and kindness. They have reflected thoughtfully on how they demonstrate these qualities in their daily lives. This week, the children will write a letter to someone they believe displays some of these virtues.

In Reading, we have continued exploring the novel Uncle Xbox, which delves into themes of modern Indigenous life. This has been complemented by non-fiction texts about Captain Cook and the arrival of the First Fleet, providing valuable context and sparking rich discussions about the impact on First Nations Australians and our shared history. We highly recommend that children spend 15–20 minutes reading each night. Just like kicking a footy or playing an instrument, reading takes practise! Fluency, expression, phrasing and understanding are the key ingredients to becoming a confident, capable reader. Plus, getting lost in a good book is one of the best ways to unwind after a busy day!

In Writing, the focus has been on the structure of a historical recount. The children have been taking notes from readings and videos to draft their own recounts, using chronological order, time connectives, and past tense verbs to effectively convey historical events. The children have continued learning how to write complex and compound sentences to enhance their writing. They have learnt the ‘al’ suffix and spelling rules – ‘c’ ‘k’ and ‘ck’ make the /k/ sound and when to used them, ‘que’ and ‘qu’ make the /k/ sound, and when to use them. The children are producing some amazing cursive writing. You could ask for a demo at home!

In Mathematics, we have been working with decimals, learning how to accurately place tenths and hundredths in decimal form. Students have explored decimals on number lines, used decimals, and made connections between fractions and their decimal equivalents. We have introduced a times tables challenge where students complete 50 multiplication equations within 3 minutes. As they master one level, they progress to the next. We encourage regular practice at home, especially for children who find accuracy and automatic recall of times tables challenging.

In Inquiry, we have been deepening our understanding of Australian history before and after the arrival of the First Fleet. The children have read and listened to firsthand accounts to explore the reasons for British settlement, as well as its impact on Indigenous Australians. It has been inspiring to see the children think reflectively and ask meaningful questions about the past and how it shapes the way we live together today.
