Term 2 Curriculum Overviews
Literacy
This term, our whole school English focus is on Narrative and Poetry writing. Students across all year levels are developing their skills using the 6+1 Writing Traits and following our school’s Writing Cycle to plan, draft, edit and publish their creative pieces.
In Foundation to Year 2, students continue to build strong reading and writing foundations. They work daily on phonics through the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program, helping them become confident readers and writers.
Students in Foundation to Year 2 are:
- Listening to, reciting and performing poems, chants, rhymes and stories using expression and a clear voice.
- Reading a variety of stories and poems, using strategies like predicting, visualising and connecting ideas to build understanding.
- Exploring how rhyme, rhythm, repetition and interesting language make poems and stories engaging.
- Learning about nouns, verbs, adjectives and punctuation to help create strong sentences.
- Creating short narratives and poems, organising their ideas clearly with simple sentence structures.
- Practising editing skills to improve their spelling, punctuation and meaning.
- Building handwriting fluency by writing lower- and upper-case letters neatly.
In Years 3 to 6, students are further developing their speaking, reading and writing skills, with a strong focus on creating imaginative and expressive texts.
Students in Years 3 and 4 are:
- Practising speaking clearly and confidently to share stories, ideas and poems with expression.
- Reading a range of stories and poems, using strategies like predicting, questioning and summarising to build deeper understanding.
- Exploring how authors use words, images, sound and rhythm to create mood and meaning.
- Writing narratives and poems, organising ideas clearly and using rich vocabulary, similes and onomatopoeia.
- Editing their writing to strengthen structure, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
Students in Years 5 and 6 are:
- Building on others' ideas in conversations and using precise, expressive language when presenting.
- Reading and comparing stories and poems from different times and cultures, and analysing how language shapes meaning.
- Exploring the use of imagery, rhythm, alliteration and text structures in poetry and narrative writing.
- Writing detailed and imaginative narratives and poems, selecting strong vocabulary and experimenting with literary techniques like metaphors and alliteration.
- Editing carefully to improve the flow, impact and style of their writing, and building stamina to write fluently over sustained periods.
Numeracy
During this term, students across the school will continue to use the four proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning during their Numeracy sessions. They will learn through a mixture of learning of learning styles. The focuses for this term are:
Foundation:

- Measurement (Length, Mass and Capacity).
- Counting and place value.
Grade 1/2:
- Place Value

Mini Lit
Mini Lit Sage is a literacy program that is offered to students in Grade 1 &2 who will benefit from additional support to help them read and spell. It is a systematic phonics program and reinforces the concepts covered in the classroom. Students are selected based on a few short assessments. Students work in small groups of up to 5 for 45 minutes four days a week. Currently we have 4 groups running with Mon, Beck and Ms Trickey. All students are showing excellent progress.
