PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

The Moorabbin Primary School Community touch the land and think of the Bunurong People and surrounding Clans of the Kulin Nation

who cared for the land before us.

We share our gratitude to their Elders past, present and emerging.  As we touch this land, we promise to treasure it, taking care of all its people, animals, plants and waterways. We at Moorabbin Primary School appreciate this land.

Thank you.

Dear Parents and Carers,

NEW PLAY SPACE WILL BE READY NEXT WEEK!

A huge thank you to Mr Chris Wende one of our School Councillors who has been driving the new playground project. It has come a long way, and children are excitedly waiting for the fencing to come down so they can start enjoying the area.

HEAD LICE

We have an unusually large number of cases of head lice in our school at the moment. Below is some information from one of our amazing mums in regard to headlice and an eco-friendly spray that she has developed which may help if your child has head lice.

Even though our uniform policy does not stipulate for long hair to be up, a very simple tip that I encourage our families to use to help reduce the spread of headlice is to kindly encourage parents to have their child’s hair up. (ponytails, simple braids, buns etc…) Keeping hair tied back can minimise contact and help everyone be “itch-free”!

REVIEW WEEK, LAST DAY MONDAY 19TH MAY

All schools must participate in a school review every 4 years and the school review informs the development of the school’s 4-year School Strategic Plan.A School Strategic Plan is a 4-year plan for school improvement, completed by schools after their school review. The plan is based on the key directions recommended by the school review panel and an analysis of school performance data and evidence conducted during the review. The School Strategic Plan:

  • outlines the school's vision and values
  • sets goals and targets for improved student outcomes
  • lists the key improvement strategies that will help achieve these goals and targets
  • is sensitive to local needs

As part of the process, the school leadership team, 2 external challenge partners, the networks senior learning improvement officer and the School Council president form the panel along with an external reviewer allocated by DET who all work together. We have had 2 Field days where our school documents are reviewed, our classes are visited, our teaching staff observed, parent workshops are held, and sections r of the school community are interviewed.

Below is some direct Feedback from our student groups, as a s staff we have found this enlightening, refreshing and have started to implement some of the feedback into our classrooms.

STUDENTS (JUNIOR/MIDDLE/SENIOR)

Wellbeing

  • All groups identified the school values, what they were and why we used them
  • All groups identified that SEL was a program that helped them with wellbeing, how to chat, help with friendships, big emotions and strategies that they could use when they were in difficult situations
  • All groups love meditation and the calming music some classes use to help calm classes
  • Overall children felt safe and welcomed at the school
  • In senior they identified that some teachers dealt with different children and behaviours differently and it wasn’t consistent which led to them talking about fairness and different rules for different teachers
  • Middle and senior students talked about the soccer and playground arguments and that a lot of the preps and year 1’s don’t know how to play, they hit/kick/bite

Teaching and learning

  • All spoke about what they were learning in class, expectations, what to do if they needed help, that there were tasks that had to be completed but didn't know if they were ahead in their learning or working at the right level
  • The use of mini boards/ modelling/ showing, seeing the daily schedules help so that they know what's coming up, what's next. “This is really important to us”

Feedback

  • All spoke about teachers having high expectations
  • All areas spoke about that there was no real feedback or ‘formal chats’ other than some classes got to see or know about their test scores, but “this is not feedback to help me with my learning”
  • Some spoke about stickers and stamps if they did a “good Job or good work”

In class Goals

  • Some areas had individual goals, and they know what they were and were working towards them
  • Some felt that the goals went for too long and not achievable and the teachers or students never went back to them
  • Some classes had a Class goal, so this didn't help the children as it was a class goal

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR TEACHERS TO KNOW

  • “Less talking more doing stuff”
  • “More lessons how we can get the maths in our heads”
  • All levels spoke about the daily reviews- they want them adjusted- “they can sometimes be too long”
  • Student leaders- what do they actually do? Count up house points? We want to know what the jobs are
  • We would love for our home room teachers to do maybe a fun game in or outside or a craft lesson or more hands on lessons

AROUND THE SCHOOL

Mother’s Day stall thank you!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents who attended and worked hard behind the scenes to make and create all the beautiful, individual and hand-crafted gifts for the stall and to those that manned the stall on the day…thank you!

It was the first of hopefully many more stalls to come where the theme of crafting, community building and sustainable gifts can continue to be at the forefront of these important and popular stalls.

A massive shout out to Jennifer Bray who had this vison for our school and led it and pulled of an amazing Mother’s Day stall. Thank you, Jen, I know I speak on behalf of all our community who appreciated and were grateful for all your incredible hard work. THANK YOU!

Total profit made so far from our P&F fundraising efforts –

  • Mother’s Day stall-$3,298.67.
  • Election BBQ sales -Total $2,328.55
  • Mother’s Day Luncheon- $8300

Almost $14k! amazing!!! All of these funds raised will go towards the basketball upgrade!

This week it has been great to welcome back Mr Leeden after his long absence with his broken foot. We know that the class and his parent community had missed his presence and interaction with 1L. Welcome back Mr Leeden!

This week in SEL our Social and Emotional Learning program the children in the younger levels have been delving into the Topic KINDNESS. How to show it, what it looks like and what is also means when there are behaviours that are unkind and providing our students with strategies to help them and support each other when they come across unkind behaviours.

In our Year 4 classes the students have been reading a mentor text called “If I was prime minister” leading into their writing genre of Persuasion and each student focusing on an area that they could write a strong argument to help persuade readers on a topic of their choice.  The topics included homelessness, food, animal safety and welfare to name a few. Hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did. They are on display outside of their classrooms.
