Term 2 Music Update: Performances, Composition & Creative Growth

It’s been a vibrant and productive Term 2 in the Music Department, with students engaging in a wide range of performance, composition, and listening activities. From instrumental rehearsals to composing original film scores, students have continued to build their musical skills and confidence.

Music Performance – End-of-Term Showcase

Throughout the term, students have been diligently developing their instrumental music skills, focusing on coordination, fine motor development, teamwork, self-expression, and building self-esteem. To celebrate their efforts, each class will participate in a peer music performance assessment at the end of the semester - a fantastic opportunity to share their progress and performance pieces.

Here are the current songs being rehearsed across our classes:

Year 8 Film Music Composition

At the start of Term 2, Year 8 students completed their Film Music Key Learning Task (KLT), focusing on how music enhances and shapes the emotional impact of visual storytelling. Students explored key compositional techniques and planned their own film scores using storyboard templates. They composed music for a scene or sequence, applying devices such as leitmotif, underscoring, and mickey-mousing. The unit concluded with thoughtful student reflections on their experiences, strengths, and goals for future composition work.

Year 7 Critical Listening Assessment

In Week 4, Year 7 students completed their Critical Listening KLT. This assessment challenged them to identify, describe, and analyse different elements of music and stylistic features across a range of genres. Students demonstrated growing confidence in using music terminology to express their observations and understandings.

Wednesday Lunchtime Music Club

Music Club continues to thrive as a much-loved space for creativity and connection each Wednesday lunchtime. With support from our enthusiastic Music staff, students have been rehearsing Valerie by Amy Winehouse. The club offers a welcoming environment for students to explore music, develop friendships, and collaborate with like-minded peers. All students are welcome to join, play instruments, or simply enjoy being part of a musical community.
