FOUNDATION NEWS
What an exciting beginning to the term it has been in Foundation! As curious learners, we have been diving into all sorts of adventures in both maths and literacy, and we’re so proud of all of the progress.
As mathematicians, we have been exploring location language, learning how to describe where things are using words like behind, in front, next to, and near. To bring these ideas to life, we went on a playful journey around the school playground and created a fabulous class book showing ourselves in different positions. It was a wonderful way to combine movement, creativity, and learning!
As writers, we have been busy putting their thoughts and experiences into words. As communicators, we have written engaging weekend recounts and had lots of fun responding to our whole-class shared reading text, A Nice Walk in the Jungle by Nan Bodsworth. There was great excitement as we wrote about the different animals we spotted, the unexpected moment when the boa constrictor swallowed the class, and the brave teacher who saved the day!
It has been truly rewarding to see how much their writing is developing, especially in their use of sight words. A big thank you to our families for supporting this learning at home - your efforts make a big impact.
We look forward to welcoming those parents who can join us for our Initialit classroom session this Tuesday morning. It’s a great chance to see the children in action and share in their learning journey.
Thank you for your continued support—we can’t wait to share more of what’s ahead!
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: We will be learning how to break numbers into parts and put them back together using part-part-whole models to build their number sense.
- Reading: Revision of sounds, stretching out words, using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words (m,s,t,a,p,i,f,r,)
- Writing: Writing about our experiences- recording different sounds we can hear in words, and beginning to use spaces and full stops in our writing
- Inquiry: Tuning in to our Inquiry into stories and cultures
- Religion: Learning about the Sacrament of Eucharist and the scripture passage “The Road to Emmaus”
- The Resilience Project: Emotional Literacy

YEAR 1/2 NEWS
Last week, our Year 1/2 students jumped into another exciting week of learning! During their first full week back at school, they explored non-fiction texts, reviewed key place value concepts, and took part in many other enriching activities.
The week began with dance lessons with ‘Dance Until You Drop’. Students were introduced to various types of dance, such as Hip Hop, Salsa and Traditional African Dancing. During our first dance class, we were given a quick history of the different dances and then our instructor walked us through the dance moves. We were able to practise each move and then put it all together with the music. We had so much fun and are excited for our future lessons!
This term, we will be focusing on being a researcher. Throughout our reading session, we will be provided with the opportunity to explore a variety of different non-fiction texts. During our reading group time, we have been learning to read non-fiction books and information texts. So far, we have identified the purpose of these texts and the difference between a fact and opinion. We will be learning to identify text structure and language features in the coming weeks.
Additionally, we have gotten back into the SMART Spelling routine and this week's spelling rule is, the digraph /ng/ making the sound "ng" as in king. We are continuing to use the sound circles strategy to practice our selected words.
As mathematicians, we began last week by reviewing place value concepts, focusing on two- and three-digit numbers. This week, we are diving into number lines! We will learn how to benchmark and locate numbers on a variety of number lines. We'll start with number lines that include many reference points, and gradually move to those with fewer clues - challenging our thinking and deepening our understanding.
Thank-you for returning the Chinese Museum excursion notes. We will contact parents who will be accompanying us by this Friday the 9th of May.
We appreciate your support as you have recommenced the home learning routine. We are very impressed with the effort that has already been put into reading, spelling and mathematics.

YEAR 3/4 NEWS
As a school community, we gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day. Thank you 3/4BP and 5/6ZK for leading our community in a memorable ceremony service.
As mathematicians, we are learning to recall our multiplication facts using efficient strategies. We have been practising our multiplication facts daily with various card games. We are continuing to show our understanding of drawing arrays and recording number sentences.
As inquirers, we have been investigating the topic of Migration in Australia. We received a special delivery from the Museum which contained various artefacts belonging to people who travelled to Australia from different countries. As thinkers, we used our learnt knowledge to understand the concept of migration. We viewed and analysed the artefacts using See Think Wonder thinking routine.
Spotlight on Writing
Excellent effort, Maria, in writing an ANZAC piece in 100 words.
Well done!

YEAR 5/6 NEWS
As mathematical thinkers, we have been learning about Fractions, including finding out about proper and improper fractions. We have been learning to convert fractions to then place these on a number line.
As readers, we have begun reading our new Novel, Us Mob Walawurru Book by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka.
Here is a description of the book:
Central Australia, 1960s … Ruby lives on a cattle station and goes to the ‘silver bullet’ school where she comes across Mr Duncan, her well-meaning teacher. Follow Ruby as she seeks to understand why two cultures are at odds with each other. The more Ruby learns, the harder the journey becomes as she is drawn back to country to uncover the secrets of her past.

Times Table Rock Stars
Next week we will engage in a three day Multiplication Competition, each student is invited to play for 1 hour each day. They will be provided with some time during the school day - not the entire hour each day.
How does it work?
Learners will try to answer as many multiplication and division questions correctly as they can. The winning school and class will be based on the highest average number of correct answers per pupil.
Rules:
Every correct answer that a student gives, in any game type, between the hours of 7:30am AEST to 7:30pm AEST each day will contribute to their class and school score. There is a 60-minute limit playtime per player, per day.
Religion
This week in Religion, our Grade 5/6 students explored the life and legacy of Pope Francis. As part of their deep dive into his accomplishments, students learned about his ongoing commitment to helping those in need and his dedication to caring for the environment. To celebrate his generosity and compassionate leadership, students wrote creative diary entries from the perspective of Pope Francis, reflecting on his values and the positive impact he has made in the world. Through this activity, they gained a deeper appreciation for how faith can inspire action, kindness, and responsibility for others and our planet.
Camp Information Night
Thank you to all the families who virtually attended our Camp Information night. We appreciate all the engagement and questions. If you have any additional questions, we are here to answer them.
A Huge Congratulations to Xavier!
On April 6th, Xavier took on the 14km Run for the Kids and raised an incredible $850 for the Children’s Hospital. After around eight weeks of dedicated training - including early 6am runs - he completed the race in just 90 minutes. An outstanding achievement! We’re all incredibly proud and grateful for his hard work and generosity.
