3rd Sunday of Easter - Year C
John 21:1–19
After the resurrection, the disciples are fishing - returning to something familiar, perhaps trying to make sense of everything. They've fished all night and caught nothing. Then Jesus appears, though they don’t recognise Him at first. He tells them to cast the net on the other side - and suddenly, abundance. When they come ashore, Jesus has already prepared breakfast. Then comes a tender moment: Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?”- echoing Peter’s three denials.
This Gospel is about restoration and mission. Jesus doesn’t scold or shame Peter. Instead, He invites him back into love and leadership. In doing so, Jesus shows us that our failures aren’t the end. Forgiveness is not just about healing - it’s about being called again, sent again.
Jesus meets us in ordinary moments - on the shore, at breakfast, in failure, and in new beginnings. Like Peter, we are invited to love Jesus not just with words, but by feeding His sheep - living out love in service.
💬 Discussion Starters
- Why do you think the disciples didn’t recognise Jesus at first? Have you ever “missed” God’s presence in your life until later?
- Peter had denied Jesus three times, and now Jesus asks him three times, “Do you love me?” What does this tell us about how God deals with our failures?
- What might it mean for you, personally, to "feed my sheep" as Jesus tells Peter?
- When have you experienced a “fresh start” from God after messing up or feeling lost?
- How can we better recognize Jesus in our daily, ordinary routines—like meals, work, or conversations?
God Bless
