Grade 3 and 4

What’s Going On?

Wow! It has been a jam packed couple of weeks in the 3/4 area. We have been exploring our CBL topic of 'Community' across our grades and have had some wonderful collaborative activities exploring key questions such as “What does a Community look like, sound like, feel like?”, “How can we tell what communities we belong to? “ and

“What rules do our communities have?" We have been linking this back to our classroom agreements, working as a team/community within our classroom to create safe, happy and supportive spaces for all of our learners.

As part of the Reconciliation Action Plan at Wonga Park Primary School we were honoured and excited in the 3/4 area to learn more about the Torres Strait Islander Flag and what this represents. Student representatives wrote letters of gratitude and prepared delicious lemon myrtle scones for our guests and presenters with Mrs Sledge. It was a wonderful celebration, including a smoking ceremony and presentation of the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

The Grade 4s were lucky to go on an excursion to a local business in our Wonga Park Community, Kellybrook Winery, to see how grapes are grown and harvested, the importance of the environment and how this business forms part of the local community. Thank you to Dimi for organising this wonderful experience and to Jenny from Kellybrook Winery for taking the students and staff on a tour.

Both grade 3 and 4 classes have been busy in the garden and kitchen, tending, harvesting and preparing delicious recipes including Cheesy Zucchini Muffins and Pear Crumble -  delicious! We also explored dairy free options of these recipes which shows all of our students how versatile food can be! Thank you to our amazing volunteers for supporting this program. We are always looking for support in this program and this allows students to get the full learning experience. Please let us know If you are able to volunteer.

In The Classroom

In literacy we have been setting and discussing reading goals, as well as exploring vocabulary in context, authors purpose and comprehension strategies. We have been exploring how to use key vocabulary and build more detail into our sentences and paragraphs through our focus on planning, structuring, editing and publishing narrative texts. There have been some absolutely amazing ideas shared and celebrated.

In numeracy we have been exploring problem solving strategies with a focus on place value, understanding key maths vocabulary and explaining/showing how we work out problems. There have been some challenging number patterns in grade 4 that students have solved and also had a go at making and sharing with a partner. Students have enjoyed using 'Blooket' and interactive activities to consolidate their learning across literacy and maths.
