Welcome to Mount Carmel College

In 2024, we welcomed many new members to the Mount Carmel College community. We asked them a series of questions so we can get to know them better.

Farron Boxall - Lourdes Head of House, English, Humanities and Theology & Spirituality

I have previously worked at St Virgil's College and Colegio Divino Maestro (Madrid, Spain). When I was in high school, my favourite subjects were Japanese and Design in Wood. In Years 11 & 12 my favourite subjects were Sociology and Housing and Design.

This year I am most looking forward to becoming an aunty.

My favourite hobby is yoga, one of my favourite movies is 'A Star is Born' and my favourite song is 'Drops of Jupiter' by Train. A good book I read over the holidays was 'Something Bad Is Going to Happen' by Jessie Stephens.

A quote that sums me up is "If you believe you can, you can".

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, I would only need one thing - my dog Luna.

Ashley Cruse - Sport & Recreation Trainee

My favourite subjects when I was at school would have to be a tie between HPE and cooking. Both Sport and Cooking have been two things that I have loved to do since I was little. This is why the Sport & Recreation Traineeship was perfect for me. Mount Carmel Is the first school I have worked in and I am excited to learn lots of new things from working here. I am also most looking forward to spending time with family and friends this year, continuing to play and coach Netball for my Club and do some travel.

My favourite movies would have to be the 'Fast and Furious' movies.

A saying that I really love hearing or saying is "You are stronger than you think you are"

My mum is my biggest inspiration - she has always been there for my sister and I and aimed to give us to best life possible. She always supports me with whatever I want to do and would always take me to all the sport games I used to play.

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, they would be: a camera so I can take photos, a hat and lastly, a friend so I'm not lonely.

Claire Neyland - Lourdes 4, Mathematics and Science

For the past 7 years I have been teaching at St Marys District School on the east coast of Tasmania, but I am no stranger to Mount Carmel College, having been a student here in high school. Back then my favourite subjects were Art and Science.

This year I am most looking forward to being back in Hobart again and enjoying all that city life has to offer! In my spare time, I love painting and drawing, reading, bushwalking, camping, boating and going on adventures with my family.

My favourite book is 'Dirt Music' by Tim Winton, my favourite song is 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell and my favourite movie is 'Mamma Mia!'.

The quote that sums me up is "Hakuna Matata!".

Anyone who shows courage and integrity during challenging circumstances inspires me.

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, they would be: my Kindle, a hammock and a pocket knife.

Ben Richmond - Carmel 4, Athlete Development, Outdoor Education, HPE, Mathematics and Science

Prior to starting at Mount Carmel, I taught at Sheffield School on the north-west coast of Tasmania. In my first year here, I am most looking forward to the Outdoor Education camps throughout the year and the Year 8 STRIVE camp. I love the outdoors and competing in endurance events, so it is not surprising that when I was at school my favourite subject was HPE.

My favourite book is ‘The Alchemist’ and my favourite movie is ‘Remember the Titans’.

The quote that best sums me up is “Be yourself, everyone else is taken”.

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, they would be: sunscreen, a water bottle and my bike.

Catherine Sardinha - Teacher Assistant and Youth Minister

Before commencing at Mount Carmel College, I worked at St James College in Cygnet and prior to that at Merriwa Primary School in Perth, WA for two years. I have also led many retreats all across WA, NSW and in many different schools across Tasmania. When I was a student, my favourite subjects were always Science and Maths. Science because I loved the different experiments and anything Biology related. Plus I just liked Maths.

Next month I am really looking forward to going to the Melbourne Formula One as Formula One and go-karting are my passion, even though I'm not that great at the latter. I also enjoy hiking, any fun outdoorsy activity along with board games and dancing nights with friends. In my downtime, I enjoy doing sudoku and reading non-fiction (weird...I know!).

The book I’ve most enjoyed in the last few months was ‘The Life-changing Magic of Tidying’ by Marie Kondo. It was just so wholesome and simple. Currently my favourite movie is ‘The French Dispatch’ as I quite like the filmmaker, Wes Anderson. My favourite song is difficult because it really depends on mood and genre, but two of my all-time favourites are ‘Spring 1’, ‘Married Life’ by Michael Giacchino from the movie UP and most Brockhampton songs, as I love some alternative hip-hop.

A quote that resonates with me is "If you have two coats, you have stolen one from the poor." - Dorothy Day. While I may have many coats, this resonates with me because I aspire to be as giving and unattached to material possessions as the saints.

Many people inspire me, but mostly my wholesome old lady friends. If I had to choose one person, it would be Mother Teresa. There are many amazing stories but my favourite is a time where Mother Teresa sits with the dying man at the train station. She helped clean him and prayed for him in his final moments. When he died later that day, she gave him a proper burial. We only know about this story (very simplified version) because of the reporter that was writing a story about her in her later years.

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, they would be: a Swiss Army knife, a water filtration system and a fire starter....but to be honest, I don't think I’d last more than a day.

Jasmine Wallace - Teacher Cadet (Year 3)

I graduated Year 12 last year and I am doing a cadetship program with Catholic Education where I am learning to be a teacher. Mount Carmel College is the first school I have worked in.

When I was a student, my favourite subjects were Humanities and Social Sciences, and Outdoor Education/Sport.

In 2024  I am most looking forward to taking the first steps into my career and learning under an amazing support staff at Mount Carmel. In my spare time I have a casual job, spend a lot of time playing, coaching and umpiring netball, and spending time with family and friends.

My favourite movie is the series of 'Despicable Me' films.

The quote that best sums me up is “Just do it”- Nike.

Sharni Norder (Layton) is now a retired professional netball and football player inspires me. In her professional years she captained the Australian Diamonds Netball Team, won multiple Netball World Cups, Commonwealth Games, and ANZ Championships, and was selected into the AFLW all Australian Team. She wrote and published a book ‘No Apologies’, which is an inspiring read about her life, the many barriers she faced and her determination and don’t give up attitude. She is an ideal role model for young girls.

If I could take only 3 things to a deserted island, they would be: a surfboard, a pack of UNO cards and a private jet.
