Celebrating Tasmania's Native Ducks: A Gift for World Wildlife Day
World Wildlife Day will be celebrated this Sunday and in honour of the day, our Environmental Team seized an excellent opportunity to share knowledge about Tasmania's native ducks. A recently published book, Ducks of Tasmania, showcases the 11 native duck species in Tasmania. The Pacific Black Duck conservation group played a vital role in this initiative, generously offering the book to school libraries free of charge.
Illustrated with finesse by Sam Lyne, the book is a true gem, providing an accessible exploration into the world of Tasmanian native ducks. Readers will uncover valuable insights into the ducks' diets, unique appearances, and the impact of introduced species on our native duck population.
Significant contributors to this endeavour have been our dedicated environmental leaders, Lucia Devine and Lottie Groves, and the volunteering students whose efforts have ensured that numerous copies of the book find a welcoming home in school libraries across the state. This generous distribution aims to equip students with valuable information about the native ducks that inhabit our beautiful island.
The collaboration between our Environmental Team, Mount Carmel Library, and the Pacific Black Duck conservation group reflects a shared commitment to environmental education. By placing these books in the hands of students, we hope to foster an appreciation for Tasmania's unique wildlife and inspire a sense of responsibility towards conserving our native species.
As we celebrate World Wildlife Day, it is important for us all to take a moment and acknowledge the importance of preserving our local biodiversity. The gift of these books to Tasmanian school libraries serves as a small but meaningful step towards creating a generation of informed and environmentally conscious citizens.
Lottie and Lucia are highly enthusiastic College Leaders and are energised to support greater sustainability practices within in our College. We will report on more initiatives around the College in future editions of The View.
