NAPLAN
Julia O'Rourke
During Weeks 6 and 7 of this term, our Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 students will undertake the annual NAPLAN assessments. These assessments in Literacy and Numeracy gather information about how students are progressing in school.
For teachers, NAPLAN provides data which can be used to develop priorities for whole-class teaching or appropriate intervention strategies to improve individual student outcomes. For parents, NAPLAN provides information on how your student is performing against national standards, not just against other children in a class. For students, NAPLAN provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate what they have learned.
At Mount Carmel NAPLAN assessments are just one set of evidence we gather to monitor student learning. While students are encouraged to do their best, it is not expected that they will undertake specific study or practice to prepare for these tests.
While students are encouraged to do their best in NAPLAN, it is not expected that they will undertake specific study to prepare for these tests, rather they are assessments of learning over time. Primary and Secondary students will have an opportunity to have a general practice prior to the testing dates, using the Public Demonstration Site which is accessible to all. The assessments on this site provide an opportunity to practise the types of questions students will be asked to answer and enable us to check that the NAPLAN platform and the College’s connectivity function reliably.
It is a priority for us that NAPLAN assessments are conducted in a calm and supportive environment in order to avoid unnecessary stress and we trust that parents and carers will support us in this endeavour. Student Support staff have been in communication with parents/carers of students who are eligible for adjustments and those parents/carers who have indicated they wish to withdraw their daughter from NAPLAN assessments for 2024.
It is essential that all Year 7 and 9 students bring a fully charged laptop and a set of headphones/earphones to school each day during NAPLAN. While the College has some devices and headphones available in case of technical difficulties with students’ laptops, we rely on students coming prepared for NAPLAN to run smoothly.
The Primary NAPLAN Schedule is included on the Primary News page of this edition of The View and the Secondary schedule can be found below. Parents/carers are asked please to avoid scheduling appointments at these times. Where students are absent for a NAPLAN assessment, catch up tests will be scheduled in the following days.
