Year 9 History Excursion – Walking in the Footsteps of the Past

On Tuesday 17 June, our Year 9 History students embarked on a meaningful excursion exploring Gippsland’s wartime history. They visited the Gippsland Armed Forces Museum, Briagolong RSL log cabin, Mechanics Hall, Cenotaph, and Annie Whitelaw’s gravesite at Briagolong Cemetery.

At the Armed Forces Museum, students examined artefacts and heard personal stories from veterans about conflicts including WWI, WWII, the Vietnam War, and the Boer War. The visit to Briagolong focused on the local story of Annie Whitelaw and her six sons—four of whom never returned from WWI—bringing a deeply personal connection to history.

Students also explored the community’s wartime efforts at the Mechanics Hall and Cenotaph, viewing commemorative items like the Honour Roll pull-down blind dedicated to Annie Whitelaw’s sacrifice. At the Briagolong RSL, veterans shared firsthand wartime experiences and displayed original artefacts, followed by a BBQ lunch generously provided by the RSL.

The day ended with a respectful moment at Annie Whitelaw’s resting place. Year 9 student Elyse Cahill reflected:

“It was such a memorable experience. One of the highlights for me was getting to touch the blade of a German WWI bayonet. It really brought history to life and helped me understand the reality of what soldiers carried and used during the war. Another standout moment was being able to hold an original Japanese Silk WWII flag. It was amazing to see such a rare and delicate item up close—it made the stories we’ve learned in class feel even more real and powerful. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole trip. It was interesting to see and handle real historical artefacts, and it gave me a deeper appreciation of the past.”

We are proud of our students’ maturity, curiosity, and respect throughout this powerful and memorable experience.

Year 9 Geography Excursion Tarra Bulga National Park

On Tuesday 17 June, Year 9 Geography students visited Tarra Bulga National Park to explore the natural landscape, learn from park staff, and investigate local plant and animal life. Students participated in hands-on activities, including examining animal bones and tails, and learning how tracking devices are used to monitor wildlife populations. They also explored native plants and discovered how they were traditionally used as bush tucker by Indigenous communities.

Each class had the opportunity to hear from a scientist and a park ranger. The scientist discussed how they collect data on species reproduction, genetics, and adaptations—particularly in lizards—while the ranger shared insights into managing and protecting the national park.

The students then went on a short hike, observing and documenting local flora and fauna. A highlight was stopping at the suspension bridge to create a field sketch, even as rain began to fall and the temperature dropped.

Despite the cold, it was a memorable and engaging day filled with learning and adventure. Students returned to school with plenty to share with their Year 9 History classmates, who had spent the day in Briagolong.

VCE VM Industry Visit

On Wednesday 25 June, our Year 11 VM students visited the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange as part of our Industry Exploration Program.

They met Kim, Team Leader at GRLE, who shared insights about careers and pathways within Wellington Shire, agronomy, becoming a stock and station agent, and what working with livestock at GRLE involves.

The students also caught up with Chris and past CCS student Jake, who spoke about their journeys in the livestock industry after school.

A great experience connecting classroom learning with real-world opportunities!

Year 9 Odyssey

As part of our Odyssey program, Theodore House has been working on a community project. Our Year 9 students created thank you packs filled with homemade sweet treats to show appreciation for our hardworking College cleaners.

The packs were presented and the gesture was warmly received. A simple but meaningful way to say thank you to those who do so much behind the scenes!

Year 9 Art

Our Year 9 Art class recently had the opportunity to explore pottery using the pottery wheels for the first time! Students quickly adapted to the new technique and produced some fantastic results. A hands-on, creative experience that was both challenging and rewarding!
