Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

PBL Lessons

Week 1 - Routines

Week 2 - Using the High 5

Week 3 - Hands and Feet to yourself

Week 4 - Act Safely

High 5

We have retaught the High 5 strategy as a way for students to solve small social problems in a calm and respectful way. The steps include:

1. Ask nicely

2. Ask firmly

3. Ignore

4. Walk away

5. Report

We teach the High 5 to help children develop important social skills such as assertive communication, emotional regulation and knowing when to seek help. It empowers students to try to resolve issues independently while also recognising that it's okay to ask for support when needed. Practising the High 5 helps build a positive and safe school environment where everyone feels respected and supported.

Respectful Relationships and Student Wellbeing

The Importance of Wellbeing and How We Can Help

At Goondiwindi State School, we know that a child's wellbeing is the foundation for learning, confidence, and positive friendships.

What is Wellbeing?

Wellbeing is more than just feeling happy. It includes how children feel about themselves, how they manage emotions, how they connect with others, and how they cope with the ups and downs of daily life.

Why It Matters

  • Children with strong wellbeing are more engaged in learning
  • It supports positive behaviour and friendships
  • It helps children develop resilience and confidence
  • It reduces anxiety and supports good mental health

Respect Program at Goondiwindi State School

  • To support student wellbeing and promote positive social and emotional development, our school is delivering the Respect Program. This program continues to help students build skills in empathy, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and understanding diversity. It complements our whole-school approach to wellbeing and encourages students to build safe and respectful relationships, both in and out of the classroom.

How Parents Can Support Wellbeing at Home

  • Talk regularly: Make time to talk and really listen to your child about their day
  • Build routines: Consistent routines help children feel secure and organised
  • Encourage play: Play and physical activity are great for emotional regulation
  • Model coping skills: Show how you manage stress and talk about emotions openly
  • Limit screen time: Balance screen use with outdoor time, reading and rest
  • Celebrate effort: Focus on trying and improving, not just winning or outcomes
  • Reach out: If your child is struggling, don’t hesitate to contact the school for support

Our staff are always here to help your child thrive – together we can build a strong foundation for both learning and lifelong wellbeing.

We also welcomed our new helper, Leah. Leah will join us every Wednesday to help our little Mates with their activities.

Coming up this week we are joining in the last week of Physical Activity Month. Come and get active with us this week.
