Learning In My Level

LEVEL 5

As we approach the end of another busy term, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many highlights and achievements from Term 2.

Throughout the term, students participated in a wide range of engaging learning experiences, including the excitement of interschool sports, Family Life Education lessons and ongoing rehearsals for our upcoming school production. These activities provided valuable opportunities for students to collaborate, develop their confidence, and showcase their talents beyond the classroom.

In Writing, our focus was on utilising numerous writing techniques inspired by the topic ‘Glitter’ for students to ‘bump up’ their writing so that the piece published at the end of term would be demonstrably different to the piece produced in test conditions at the start of term. Over six weeks, students were guided to slow down and deeply engage with the writing process; planning thoughtfully, making extensive revisions and editing with care. More recently, we explored poetry, where students experimented with different poetic techniques to create a variety of imaginative and expressive poems. These included using rhyme, rhythm, imagery and a wide variety of figurative language. A selection of these creative works can be viewed below, showcasing some of our emerging authors.

We were also fortunate to welcome Erin the owner of The Kids’ Bookshop, whose visit ignited our passion for reading and introduced us to a range of exciting new titles. This perfectly complemented our Literacy Circles, where students have engaged in rich discussions around texts and worked collaboratively to develop our class Top 10 Books list. A display of our favourite books is featured below.

In Mathematics, students have built fluency and flexibility by applying a variety of strategies to different topics, with a heavy focus on multiplication. We have encouraged students to explain their thinking, collaborate with peers, and make connections between concepts. For some of our students, it was also their first time competing in our Maths Olympiad. Our competitors have been working hard with Mrs Carter to improve their problem solving and critical thinking skills, well done!

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, effort and growth our Level 5 students have shown throughout the semester. We look forward to another productive and rewarding term ahead.

Newsletter Year 6 – Term 2 Week 10

We have had a magical and porridge filled Term 2 in Year 6.

With not long to go now, the students have been working tirelessly on out production. It has been so impressive seeing all of the hardwork the students have put in to learning their lines, practising their dances and getting ready to perform. I think I can safely say The Porridge Pot is stuck in everyone’s head. Hopefully there is lots of practising over the holidays ready for our performances early Term 3!

In Maths, we have been exploring fractions, decimals and percentages and everything else in between. Students have learnt to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and solve all the sums related to their decimal and percentage representation. Additionally, students have refreshed their knowledge on the four operations, specifically looking at multiplication and division.

In Writing, the cohort have spent weeks reviewing, updating and bumping up their glitter narrative to create a detailed and amazing piece of writing. It was nice to celebrate some of these at our open afternoon. We have moved on to explore poetry and ways to express ideas in poetic ways. Student’s will be constricting a poem to share with their classes in the end of term. In Reading, students have students have enjoyed completing their Lit Circles and unpacking their books over the term.

Much to the students delight we have also embraced our Sexual Health Victoria (SHV) program over the final weeks of term. Students have learnt all things puberty and reproduction. How exciting!

We have had a fabulous first half of the year!

What a fabulous term! Well done year 6!
