Student Leadership @ EDSC

School for Student Leadership

Friday 20 June we had four students from the School for Student Leadership present their Community Learning Project to teachers and principals from across the state.

The students Ryan, Chloe, Emily & Rosie have been at the School for Student Leadership for the past 8 weeks learning about teamwork, leadership, independence, communication, reliance just to name a few and as part of their time in Marlo, they are required to complete a project for the community.

Our team are taking primary school students to the Roseville Retirement village to engage in an intergenerational program, which is fantastic and we look forward to seeing them roll this out upon their return in term 3.

We were really proud of how they presented as the showed engaging techniques and a really important and powerful message in their project.

Beyond the project, we have seen an incredible growth in confidence, communication skills, collaboration and creativity, which is fantastic to see and something we cannot wait to welcome back to EDSC.

Appreciation Day

On Thursday 26 June our Middle and Senior School Captains organised an appreciation day with the college community! Braving the cold, our students set up tables and were given the opportunity for students to write cards of appreciation to other students in the college community. What a buzz it created in the middle courtyard as the masses descended to write notes of appreciation which will be handed out in the coming days to those lucky recipients.

A huge congratulations to our School Captains and Middle School Captains for running such a successful event and getting our community to connect and share positive messages amongst the community!

Beverly Hills Gala Day and District AFLW Day

On Monday our student free day, we had 19 students attend Beverly Hills to help out with the officiating of the annual sports gala day! Students were required to referee and support event organiser throughout the day and have done EDSC and our community very proud as they volunteered to contribute to the broader community. The feedback has resulted in more opportunities for our students at EDSC to get involved with future events and we cannot thank the students enough for giving up their own personal time to help out Beverly Hills PS.

If that wasn’t enough, we had 7 students on 27 June head over to Reisechts Reserve to umpire the District Primary School AFLW competition. Students rugged up with whistles in hand to help out the district event which had over 6 schools from around the region for the competition! We would like to thank those students for again, giving up their time to apply their leadership skills in the broader community and helping our college to build strong community connections.

Manningham Youth Advisory Committee

On Wednesday 11 June 2025, I joined other young people from across the area at the first 2025 meeting of the Manningham Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC). Held at the Council Chambers in Doncaster, the session was all about giving youth a real say in what’s happening locally - and it delivered.

One of the most exciting parts of the night was being asked to help shape the future of cycling in Manningham. We heard from the council’s senior open space planner, Julia Mardjuki, who is leading a project to improve recreational cycling infrastructure in Manningham. As MYAC members, we were invited to share our thoughts on where new bike paths are most needed, what’s missing, and how to make cycling safer and more accessible for young people.

Even better - you don’t have to be on the committee to have your say. Manningham Council is currently running a community consultation where you can vote on potential locations for new bike paths and suggest your own ideas. If you’ve ever thought “why isn’t there a path here?” - this is your chance to help change it.

Have your say here:

The rest of the night covered upcoming youth-led events, like the 2025 Principal’s Breakfast later this year and the 2026 Youth Forum, as well as how we’ll work together throughout the year as a committee.

If you're passionate about improving life for young people in Manningham, MYAC is the place to influence those decisions.  If there are issues you would like me to raise there on your behalf – come and say hi!
