Year 4 Spotlight

An Action-Packed Term!

What an action-packed term two it’s been in Year 4! From rocking out at our Rock Concert to showing off our skills on Athletics Day, our students have embraced every opportunity with energy and enthusiasm. In the classroom, we've been diving into Kensuke’s Kingdom, a captivating class novel that has sparked rich discussions and deep thinking. In Maths, we've tackled multiplication and division, building confidence with number strategies and problem-solving. As part of our Inquiry unit, we've been exploring different cultures and countries, learning about traditions, languages, and ways of life around the world.

Concert

Written by Rex & Lola

In Performing Arts, we tried different instruments. The instruments we played were guitar, drums, ukulele and keyboard. After a few weeks, we chose our instruments for the concert. Then we practised singing and playing our instruments that we chose. After a few weeks of practising our instruments and singing our songs, we voted for our costumes. We had a talk about the stage setup and how everything is going to work, then we had a dress rehearsal in the gym and we wore our costumes to the dress rehearsal. On Thursday the 29th, we went to Preston City Hall to practise and have a look about what the concert is going to be like. That night we went on stage and performed! We went home and felt so proud and relieved.

We asked some people in our class their favourite moment, here’s what they said:

  • It was very fun, and I felt excited. I enjoyed all the music and seeing my friends perform and my favourite part was all the different songs. ~ Evie R, 4B
  • I liked helping my friends and doing it altogether and my favourite part was singing. ~ Mia M, 4B
  • I liked playing the keyboard because I have never done it before, and my favourite part was singing. ~ Lewis T, 4B
  • I liked the songs and the rehearsal. ~ Kasper W, 4B

Athletics

Last Wednesday we had the Fairfield House Athletics Carnival. There were running races, as well as field events, such as shot put, discus, and long jump. We loved having a go and trying our best, as well as watching our friends have a go and try their best as well. However, we hope it’s a little warmer next year!

  • My favourite part was the running races, and seeing how close I could get to people. ~ Kaia, 4C
  • My favourite part was also the running races, especially the 800m. ~ Henry, 4C

Literacy

We have been reading a book called Kensuke’s Kingdom. It’s about a kid called Michael who gets stranded on an island. Where he met this guy called Kensuke and who gave him food and taught him to paint and fish. We are excited to find out how it ends.

~ By Raanier N, 4D

This term, the Grade Fours have been learning about figurative language. Some examples include similes, which use 'like' or 'as' to compare, hyperbole, which is an exaggeration, and idioms, such as 'when pigs fly'."

Inquiry

The focus in Inquiry this term has been on building students’ Geographical Knowledge. We have investigated these topics:

  • Location of Australia’s neighbouring countries.
  • The many Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia, and the custodial responsibility they have for Country/Place, and how this influences views about sustainability.
  • Types of natural vegetation and the significance of vegetation to the environment, the importance of environments to animals and people, and different views on how they can be protected; the use and management of natural resources and waste, and different views on how to do this sustainably.
  • Similarities and differences in individuals’ and groups’ feelings and perceptions about places, and how they influence views about the protection of these places.
  • Similarities and differences between places in terms of their type of settlement, demographic characteristics and the lives of the people who live there.

Children have been busy creating and presenting posters (pictured below) and PowerPoint presentations in their groups and then sharing their knowledge with the rest of their classes. As their teachers, we are so proud to see them working and assisting each other so well throughout this process. There have been lots of interesting and valuable discussions during the presentations.
