Supporting Young People in a Time of Global Uncertainty

With so many conflicts currently unfolding around the world, many of us are feeling the weight of global unrest. For our young people, these realities are especially difficult to process.

Through social media, 24-hour news cycles, and everyday conversations, children and teenagers are regularly exposed to distressing content, often without the tools or maturity to make sense of it. This exposure can provoke anxiety, confusion, or even emotional shutdown. Some children may show strong emotional reactions, while others may seem indifferent. However, even when a child appears unaffected, the emotional imprint can remain, shaping their behaviour, sense of safety, and view of the world.

As trusted adults, we play a vital role in helping children feel secure, heard, and hopeful.

What Can You Do?

· Check in regularly: Ask your child how they’re feeling about the things they’re seeing or hearing. Let them know it’s okay to feel worried, confused, or upset.

· Limit overexposure: Be mindful of the news your child consumes. Children don’t need to carry the full weight of the world to be informed.

· Tailor conversations: Speak in ways that match your child’s age and emotional maturity. For younger children, focus on messages of empathy and peace. For older ones, you can explore causes and contexts, while reinforcing hope and humanity.

· Model calm: Before talking to your child, check in with yourself. Children look to you for cues on how to respond. Staying calm, offering hugs, and being present can do more than any explanation.

In difficult times, compassionate and grounded adults are essential. For more guidance on this important topic, we encourage you to view the SchoolTV report: SPECIAL REPORT: Discussing War & Conflict | Vermont Secondary College

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
