Grade 1 and 2

Emergency Services Showcase

Andersons Creek Primary prep to grade 4 students were recently treated to an Emergency Services showcase thanks to our wonderful Warrandyte community parents and volunteers.

Fittingly, the showcase was held on the day before Remembrance Day. Each year to mark the date, ACPS pauses to acknowledge the service people who have fought for our country so that we can enjoy the liberties we have today.

This year was no exception, and a school assembly run by the Junior School Council students was held by the flagpole. The last post was played, and students respectfully held a minute's silence to remember. The assembly closed with an address by Will Hodgson, Warrandyte Fire Brigade Captain and Officer in Charge.

And then the showcase began. And what a showcase it was! Brought onto school grounds earlier that morning were a fire tanker, a police car, several SES vehicles, including a rescue boat and an ambulance.

Students proceeded to do four 30 minute rotations throughout the morning so that they had the opportunity to hear from each of the four services, inspect the various vehicles and ask their many and wide ranging questions. The volunteers were amazing and were able to explain the services that they each provide, the importance of these services and walk the students through the equipment that they use to do their jobs.

Eager students had a go at using the fire hose, having their heartbeat monitored, touring the vehicles, watching the rescue ladder go up and down on the SES truck and sitting on an ambulance bed amongst many other activities.

Students commented “I really liked the fact that the police use the phonetic alphabet and I like how they move around for example horses, helicopters and bikes.”

“C.F.A., thank you for coming and showing us all the amazing things that you do, it was so cool that you got to show us the big hoses.”

“I liked going in the S.E.S. car and turning the lights on and the radio in the car looked really fun to talk in.”

“I liked going in the ambulance and looking at all the different things in there; it was a really cool stretcher because it went up and down.”

ACPS students and staff are so grateful to each and every one of the volunteers who gave up their time to make this happen.

Just another reason why we love our ACPS community.
