Student achievements

Congratulations to the following students:

Bella Child (Year 6), who has been named as Children's Deputy Mayor of Hobart in a council-run program which encourages children to consider how they would inspire change in the community and improve the city for its youngest residents.

Bella's persuasive manifesto outlined her plan for Hobart to have a 'device-free fun day'. She will receive the opportunity to participate in select official duties alongside the Lord Mayor and her delegates.

Congratulations, Bella on this incredible achievement, and well done to fellow Year 6 student, Olivia Atchison, who was shortlisted for a leadership position. We are very proud of all our Year 6 students for working hard on their submissions and participating in this exciting learning experience.

This year several Year 3-10 SMC students joined thousands of students across Australia to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). Two students from St Mary's College not only achieved results in the top 1% of Australia, but they also gained the top score in Tasmania in three competitions. Rozalia Arnold (Year 8) received medals in the science and maths competitions, and Madeleine Marr (Year 8) received a medal in the writing competition. A big congratulations to you both on this exciting achievement!

Jessica Wong (Year 3) and Rozalia Arnold (Year 8), who both received a High Distinction and Best in School at the 2023 Australian Mathematics Competition. Students were presented their certificates by the Australian Maths Trust at an award ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza. Well done to you both!

Yara Assi, Grace Veitch and Zara Brown (Year 1), who recently played in their first U10s State Basketball Tournament. The trio played their hearts out and showed some amazing teamwork. Well done to these budding basketball superstars!

Lili Hall (Year 4), who won the Woolworths Surfer Groms Girls U12 Competition at Clifton Beach. What an exciting achievement, Lili! We can't wait to see you take to the waves soon!

Millie Locke (Year 6), who won first place in the Pedal Heads Inc. series for the U13 Girls Enduro Mountain Bike Racing. After only starting to race competitively in mountain biking this year, Millie's achievement is an exciting one, and we are very proud of her efforts.

Arabella Butterworth-Barry (Year 9) and Hannah Cowie (Year 10) will be performing in the upcoming Tasmanian Youth Orchestra in the Goods Shed concert in Hobart. Taking their musical talents to the stage, this is sure to be a wonderful performance!

Hannah will also be performing in the Bel Canto Young Opera, Home Sweet Home: A Christmas Concert, towards the end of the year.

We are excited to announce that four students gained awards at the recent Hobart Royal Show Youth Art and Student Photography Competition. More than 30 students from SMC participated across a range of categories, and we are very proud of their efforts.

The following awards were presented in a ceremony at Hobart City Hall:
