What you can do at home to support your child:
When visiting familiar locations or looking for an item around the home ask your child to describe the location of an object or give directions to a place in the home or your community.
Ask your child to hide an item around the home, eg teddy bear.
Use these positional words to describe where they can hide the item:
Can you hide the teddy bear……
- In front of another item
- Behind something
- To the left of
- To the right of
- Next to
- Above
- Below
- Under
- On top of
- Inside
- Outside
- Between
You can design a maze using their toys/ Lego blocks and ask your child to give directions from start to finish.
Ask your child to give you simple directions around the home.
Some examples include:
- How many steps do you need to take to get from the lounge room to your bedroom?
- How do I go from the kitchen to my bedroom?
Tell me the direction to get to school, home, a friend’s place or a place in the community.
Follow the instructions the child provides and see if their directions are accurate. Give your child some simple directions they can follow.
When visiting a shopping centre assist your child to use the information map to find a location. Let them help you to find this store by following the directions.
Draw a simple map of your local community. Include as many features as you can eg.
Park, neighbour’s house, school, supermarket.
Draw simple maps around the home to help your child to find hidden objects. Play Battleships to help your child learn grid coordinates.
Have fun!
