Middle School

Term 2 has been very busy for Middle School and our Year 9s and 10s should be proud of their many accomplishments.

On May 21st, the My Urban Art class explored the laneways of Melbourne’s CBD to learn about cultural style and messaging. Students visited the artwork in Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Mornane Place, among other fascinating locations. Students planned their own routes throughout the city and investigated how they can explore culture through their own artworks.

On June 4th, the My Animal class went to Healesville Sanctuary to learn about Australian animal adaptations, how animal habitats have changed over time, and how scientists use STEM to protect animals in the wild.

My Business students ran a Market Stall Day where they sold items they made and advertised to many keen customers.

Year 9 Woodwork students have been working hard to make items for a local business.

Duke of Edinburgh students have continued to volunteer in the local community with younger students. They went on camp for all of Week 9, completing the 15 Mile Creek Walk to receive their Bronze Award of their Duke of Edinburgh. On this camp, students completed an overnight hike, learned about local Indigenous cultures and challenged themselves with new and exciting experiences.

Year 10s will be ending Term 2 with Work Experience, which they have been organising all year. Students will spend all week immersing themselves in their new work culture and testing out career options that they are interested in pursuing. This is an amazing opportunity for our Year 10s and we are excited to hear about their experiences once they return for Term 3.

Year 10 Work Experience

This week, our Year 10 students commenced their Work Experience placements, taking an exciting step beyond the classroom and into the world of work.

Through a wide range of industry experiences, students have been developing valuable interpersonal, communication and employability skills while gaining insight into potential career pathways. Teacher check-ins throughout the week have highlighted the new learning, growing confidence and positive feedback students are receiving from employers.

Work Experience is an important part of our careers program, helping students connect their learning at school with future opportunities. The experiences and reflections gained this week will support informed subject and pathway selections, and foster personal growth, independence and a deeper understanding of life beyond school.

We thank our host employers, families and staff for their support in making this valuable learning opportunity possible.

Year 9 Sustainability Design Thinking Project

Our Semester 1 Year 9 Wood Technology students recently showcased the incredible outcomes of their Sustainability Design Thinking project in partnership with Wonderland Childcare and Kindergarten, Doncaster.

Students began last month by collecting unused wooden pallets from the centre whilst they interviewed educators, observed the learning environment, and gained a deeper understanding of the needs of their end users.

After developing and refining their ideas, students returned to Wonderland today to present their finished products and receive feedback from educators and children.

The solutions included:

• An outdoor blackboard, inspired by children’s love of drawing and creative expression with chalk on other pieces of outdoor furniture.

• A wooden toy car, designed around the strong interest many children showed in vehicles and imaginative play.

• Wooden sandpit shovels, helping to ensure more children can participate in sandpit activities and reducing competition for popular equipment.

• A table with built-in storage, allowing art and craft materials to be kept organised and within easy reach.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students applied Design Thinking to create practical, sustainable, and user-centred solutions for a real community partner. Thank you to Wonderland Childcare and Kindergarten for providing such an authentic learning opportunity and for welcoming our students throughout the project.
