Hello from Grade 5/6 K

Welcome back to Term 3! Grade 5/6K has had a wonderful beginning to this term - catching up on holiday events and beginning some new rich learning topics. 

SWPBS - When beginning each Term, we always review our classroom expectations and routines. We have been re-establihsing our end of day pack up and re-visiting our classroom expectations within our SWPBS expectations. 

Inquiry:  This term in inquiry, our topic is History and Culture. We always have lots of wonderful conversations about culture in the 5/6 classroom with many students sharing their cultural backgrounds; from traditions to the delicious food they cook with their families. Students are researching the History of a chosen culture this term and creating their own interactive websites to share. Some students are researching and presenting their own personal culture or heritage, whilst others are researching different ones across the globe. 

Some include; Greek Orthodox, Māori, Filipino, Korean, Australian, Bangladesh, Italian, Mediterranean

• We are also planning on having a culture day later in the term to celebrate all the wonderful cultures and traditions that students share in our classroom so watch this space! 

Maths  

We have been exploring mental strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and divsion this week in maths. Students have been exploring a range of different games that include both skill and strategy. They have enjoyed adapting the rules to create new and more complex ways of playing that has created some wonderful mathematical discussions this week. Reading:

We are reading Storm Boy this term and doing a novel study in our reading block. We are exploring concepts such as characters, settings and plots - but also focussing on our own background knowledge and what we apply of our own understandings of the books we read.

We are also exploring vocabulary, syntax and sentence strucutre and inferencing to comprehend our understanding of the text. Students have enjoyed reading about the author Collin Theile, the setting of Coorong and exploring the initial characters in Storm Boy.
