PYP in Action – How We Express Ourselves
This term, our 5/6 students have been exploring the Unit of Inquiry How We Express Ourselves, with a focus on poetry. The central idea is “Poetry reflects culture and self.”
Through this inquiry, students have been:
- Analysing and responding to poetry from different perspectives
- Exploring the styles and structures of poems (form)
- Discovering how poets use poetry as a way to express themselves
Key concepts: Form and Perspective
Here is a wonderful poem written by Madi in 5/6B, showcasing her learning and creativity.
Beneath the blues
Among the shore where whispers play
The sun dips low, a golden hue.
Waves that twirl and dance in bright day
As seagulls call, their cries ring true
The salty breeze, a soft caress
In nature’s arms we find our rest.
Beneath the sky, a canvas wide,
Shells glisten like jewels on sand
Footprints trace where dreams abide
Each grain a story, each wave a hand
The tide retreats with secrets old.
While hearts are warmed by sunsets bold
In twilights glow, stars ignite
Reflections shimmer on the sea
A tranquil hush envelopes night
As moonlight dances wild and free
With every breath our world feels right
In natures realm we find our light.
And there she walks with grace so sweet
The sand gives way beneath her stride
Each step a dance where earth and sea meet
With every grain a story wide
Her laughter mingles with the breeze
A fleeting moment, times soft tease.
