Capabilities Assesment

Assessing Capabilities at Chevalier College

Learning in schools today must extend beyond subject knowledge alone. Across the world, there is growing recognition that young people need a set of complex competencies (capabilities). These are sometimes called ‘21st Century skills’, ‘transferable skills’, ‘general capabilities’, or ‘graduate attributes’ and are widely accepted as skills required for our young people to thrive at school, in further study, at work, and in life.

Chevalier College is proud to be part of the University of Melbourne’s New Metrics Research Partnership and the wider Melbourne Assessment community, a network of innovative schools reimagining how we recognise and report on these essential capabilities. In line with our Future Facing Approach, and together with academic experts and international leaders, we are helping to shape a new model of education for Australia; one that moves beyond the traditions of 20th-century schooling.

In Term 3 this year, we commenced our generational approach by assessing the capabilities of Year 7 students. Around 60 teachers across the College contributed, each assessing at least one student (some up to three) in the areas of Communication, Quality Thinking, and Personal Development. Families will receive ’Fan’ reports on these capabilities at the end of term. Please see the example below. These reports are designed to:

  1. Support students and Homeroom teachers to reflect on progress and set goals.
  2. Provide parents, carers, and students with a framework for ongoing growth and development.

Looking ahead, Year 7 and 8 students will be assessed in 2026, with further year groups added annually, or each semester. Ultimately, Chevalier students in Years 10 and 12 will receive the Australian Learner Competency Credential (ALCC) by 2027, a credential already recognised by universities to complement the ATAR.

By embedding the assessment of Learner Agency, Communication, Collaboration, Quality Thinking, Personal Development, Acting Ethically, and Active Citizenship, Chevalier College ensures our students are future-ready and equipped to flourish in a rapidly changing world.

Should you wish to receive more information about the College’s approach to assessing these capabilities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jo Kirby, Assistant Principal, New Ambitions and Innovation.
